Got it from B&Q its called a FireAngel I got it just for the carbon because I have a smoke alarm .Its only small so you don't notice it as its on the wall near the ceiling it has a small green light that comes on ever minute just a flash and there is the typical button to test .You may not have seen the hassle I have had on a past thread but the bottom line is that my chimney flue has decided to stop pulling the fumes and somehow with negative air pressure there was a backdraft of air down the chimney and as such the fumes from the open coal effect fire were all coming into the living room and if it wasn't,for me constantly fidgeting about in and out of the front room we defiantly would have croaked .Small things can effect the flue not working like new windows ..a new fan in the toilet or kitchen and in my case I had cavity wall insulation and although there is or should not be any direct link to the flue or indeed air pressure within the house it has been noted before the cost is only £24.98 and the battery last seven years you can also simply pluck it off the wall and take it on holiday or stick it on a shelf as it has small flat feet .Theres no warning with this killer and what brought it home to me was I put a smoke bomb into the grate and within milli seconds the bloody front room was full as non was going up the chimney .Take care dudes and deal with it.
Even that day's weather can affect it. I condemned one fire cos of chimney not pulling. Next day the senior engineer went round and it pulled like a train. I recommend these ones. British Gas will sell you the same one at a naughty price. CARBON MONOXIDE ALARMS & DETECTORS The top one. The h450en.
Nice one Giv. We have an open fire in the living room and burn coal and logs. If the wind is in the wrong direction (or no wind) sometimes the chimney doesn’t get a good draw and the room can get very stuffy, or at worst the smoke drifts out the fire place and into the room. Opening a window can sort the problem but that kind of ruins the point of lighting a cosy fire in the first place. Think I might invest in one of those sensors. Thanks for the heads up mate.
Hi freedom not sure if this is for you as the smoke you can see and may not poison you as before it got to that state you would be sat there like a couple of chimney sweeps .Have the chimney cleaned once a Year .I agree that opening a window defeats the object but if you think when your cottage was built the doors would have fitted poorly and the windows would not have been sealed ect so the flue would have had an adequate amount of fresh air / draft to assist the updraft and now all we do is block every draft or air leakage .Check out the coal advisory council there may be something they can offer .
Thanks Shanks Ha at least someone on here knows what I have just gone though its strange as I am in construction and it makes no sense something as simple as a vertical brick stack with no mechanical components stops working but they do and there is no warning .Not sure how many folks die each year but it must be a few hundred .We have just had to fork out £1350 for a new balanced flue fire as I could not further risk using the flue and my house is only 30 years old .ps even a new building near by or even trees that have grown higher than the roof can have an effect ,

Met up with Alblade today, it was my first rideout of the year and much needed to blow the cobwebs out as I've a trackday at Oulton Park in just over a week! Out at 9.30 and home for 5.00 so it was quite a long day for this time of year. Met Al at Gisburn and took a ride up to Hawes where we met a few of his mates. Al let me ride his new Yam for a while, wow, it's so different to the blade but in a good way, spins up really fast. Not sure I'd swop it for mine though after seeing just how much it drinks!! Had some brekky at Pennygarth Cafe then went for a spin up to Manor House Farm near Catterick for another brew. Roads weren't too bad, covered in salt but plenty dry enough, still took it easy though as I was running a new front Racetec. Headed back home with about 170 miles under my belt and felt like I'd never been off it for the Winter. Proper nice to meet up with Al again but I'm glad he didn't suggest a detour to Scotland this time Filling Station at Giburn
