It's just the hands that bother me in the cold. I had heated grips on my last bike and they were sort of okay but the backs of my hands stayed cold all the time with them. How well do the ski boot socks work Eyore?

Aldi base layer stuff is the nuts for the price. I've got a few bits of it. If it lasts a year you more than get a return out of it. Cheers Eyore. I'll give the socks a go.

Also mega aldi hear fun here.

Picked up a windproof and waterproof police issue fleece in xl to go over leathers, brilliant bit of kit but solid black is not ideal but really warm, very few fleeces are windproof.

If I'm away on bike its then smart enough to wear of an evening to the pub etc.

I wear dainese vented leathers all year round, in this weather I wear a cheap fluoro wind/rain jacket over the jacket and oxford chillout underneath, dont feel the cold except in my fingers.

Well given up on the winter gear idea as there is just to much salt and frosty mornings etc up here now so thats definately it till April. Just not worth the risk in my book so battery now out , exhaust all wrapped up and cover on. :D

I got one of these last year and was shocked by the difference it made considering that it's basically the thickness of a bin bag. It certainly takes the chill off but I've not worn it in any kind of extremely cold weather.

Took the bike out for an hour yesterday and tried out a pair of Weise silk undergloves, under the Alpinestars 365 goretex gloves. They really work and cost £7.99 :)

The key to staying warm in the cold is lots of thin layers to trap air that gets warmed by the body and stays warm! People make the mistakes of a couple of thick layers when actually your better off with 4 or more thin layers. Having served in Alaska, Norway and Afghanistan in conditions of -20 and lower during winter I can vouch for it.

Layers that can wick moisture away are key also, you don't need to spend the earth either, millets, mountain warehouse and similar shops normally have some good kit at reasonable prices and lidl and aldi have had some good stuff also.

For what it's worth, I use Dianese Gortex jacket n trousers, Gerbing Heated Jacket, Aplinestar Gortex Boots & Seal Skinz cycling gloves plus two head overs.
I also carry a second set of gloves & head over. Two pair of socks and thermal longs sleeve top. Job done. Good for -3 for up to 6 hours.

Provided you're waterproof....and have decent gloves....then without a doubt the best thing for keeping you toasty is a heated vest.
The main advantage over everything else is that it more or less guarantees your core temperature will be high enough....all your vital organs, brain excepted (meat & veg don't count) are in your abdomen....keep that lot warm and your circulatory system will pump warm blood to where it's needed and do the rest.

I have the Weise 2 piece. Very toasty. Proper heated grips turn off when you remove the key, so don't discharge the battery (I have the new Honda ones with the switch integrated into the grip).

    Greetings,
I do a 120mile round trip to work and use the bike 2-3 days a week depending if I need to carry gear for work, son does a 60mile round trip 5 days a week, since we bought the Weisse two piece two years ago neither of us have suffered leaks and no problems with cold, quality kit at a reasonable price. Aldi ski socks were a really good recommendation in this thread, very good buy. BTW I eventually fitted wimpy R&G heated grips to both bikes using a single pole 12v relay from Maplins to ensure no flat batteries, simple job on his R1, total sod on my Blade to run the wiring....Mike

The jacket is lovely. Very warm in winter (With the 2 liners installed) and cool in the summer without. The one issue I have is that the fastenings for the sleeve ends on the liners are a bit prone to coming off.

The trousers are not my favourite though... The legs are advertised as being able to tuck into your boots. But they're more designed to go over (Except that they don't quite fit for that). I usually resort to using my old HG trousers with the Weise jacket most days...

Waterproofing is great though. The only time I've got wet is by not zipping up the liner properly (And a little down my neck one day, but that's only really happened once and I've commuted in down-pours).

I ride mostly into winter....stopped a weekish on my go, have a set of ixon textiles, with the waterproof and thermal inserts never have an issue getting cold. Then a set of r&g heated grips and rich cold protect gtx gloves...they definitely have less feel than normal leather gloves but you get used to to it! can recommend them but they are a 100 quid
