I really feel for the guy and his family but we all know we shouldn't speed past junctions and cross roads for this very reason....
Very sad and not nice to watch, wrong place and time and we all know how easy to misjudge how fast we are travelling when something happens and you think "oh shit" but we manage to learn from it cos we got lucky. Very brave mother to allow this to be shown IMO.
Wife showed me it earlier. I don't normally watch things like that, reminded me why not. Ironically I set my google account up today to give full access to the wife if I don't log on for more than 3 months.
An incredible brave Mum allowing this clip to be made public. We all know how vulnerable we are as 'bikers', but watching this clip makes you realise how, in a few second's life can be gone.
Very well put together video / presentation that - very powerful editing / message to the watcher I really think it will put over the message to just 'back off' a tad at junctions - its amazing how much extra time it gives to respond. The driver of the car must also be suffering terrible moments over this - knowing their actions took someones life. One thought on this, how many times on a group ride have you been 'drawn in' to the speed of the group and made overtakes / speeds through junctions just to 'stick with the group' to try and prevent any harmless banter about 'being slow' ? We all know the risks and guess its just taking points / feedback from clips like this to benefit all.
I agree it was so courageous for the Mum to release the video and I made myself watch it. I have seen accident scenes where cars have turned across cars at speed too. The text with the video states the driver didn't see the car behind David either. Yes we should ease off at junctions and wait for eye contact form a driver or look to see if a wheel turns. Another really good idea is a fu@king loud horn. When it all goes wrong it's all you've got as a last resort and hope the driver hears it, notices you and reacts. 12V Stebel Nautilus Compact Truck Air Horn I had a decent horn fitted to my last bike and the blade horn is just woeful. This video is also a reminder to fit a proper horn. My sincere condolences to David's family
Poor chap and poor family to be left with the grief. Sometimes I irritate myself because I don't drive as fast as I used to, and joke about being old and decrepit and thats why! But the reality is I have people I love and care for now and the thought of leaving my wife and 10 yr old boy without a daddy is way more powerful than my 'Riding God' ego! Enjoy your bikes people and Ride safely within your limits, as Matt said if you wanna go kamikaze "track it" respect to a very brave family, RIP.
Such a brave family, I feel this has been a terrible year for accidents! it seems to be nearly every weekend I hear of someone losing their life! just recently a father and 12 year son lost their lives on a Fife B road! I am attending a charity run on Sunday leaving from Forth bridge to Knockhill parade laps included, Live Bands, stalls, etc! Kev Meldrum a mate from the Bikers Cove who organised all of this over the last 18 month was involved in a SMIDSY on Tuesday resulting in 13 fractures of his rib cage and him having his left leg amputated this morning! It all happens in the blink of an eye guys! There is fun to be had but we have too pick and choose our moments! I think it's more a question of survival on our roads today as they're getting busier and most drivers are single minded, everyone in a rush and focused on where they want to go! It's 100% down to us to make sure we aren't the next casualty or worse! We have to ride defensively at all times and expect the unexpected keep the speed down and eyeball everyone and everything that may cross our paths! Another very powerful message is this! That some of us tend to not think of! Please ride safe guys
The lad David's video is very haunting. Since seeing it I keep imagining it, and hearing him shout "No". And very brave of the family to release the footage, as well as appearing and talking about it. Hope everyone learns lessons from this. I know junctions like that is where I am usually very cautious, however even I was nearly caught out a few weeks back as it was an uphill right hander, and just after the bend is a side road on the left. As I came round a car was just about to turn right, and thankfully even though I wasn't going fast (as I knew that road was there) the car stopped making it's turn. Keep safe everyone please.
