Quickshift Vs Clutchless stomping

I'm picking up my 'blade tomorrow and have a question about quickshifters Vs clutchless gearchanges.

I had a CBR600FM for a few years and also had a couple of R1's, but it's been 13yrs since I had a bike and I've seen that quickshifters are now a fairly common mod.

I used to use the clutch for starting/stopping, but didn't use it all that often when moving, matching revs to gears on the move.

Is there a mechanical benefit to an electronic quickshifter over the old school way of fast changing gears? Any info would be useful

 

Tony Lerone will be along to explain all, but a properly quickshifter transforms the bike making changes way smoother as it cuts the spark for that split second to release engine power from the gearbox to let the next gear click in.

 

If I'm right, quick shifter allows you to shift down gears - were without it's not possible or not recommended.

I was going to invest once but decided not too, as the gains were minimal for road use for the price..

They come more in handy for the track rather then the road..

 

As i understand it the thing is with clutchless changes is they are not always a perfect shift and without knowing it you slowly wear your gearbox out!

The quickshifter for a microsecond cuts the power and gives a perfect shift hence protecting the engine and gear box.

I have the HM shifter and it totall transforms the bike. Sorry samuk but i would disagree. Riding the baked on the road with a quickshifter totally changes the experience its a much smother and progressive ride! The noise it makes is also very addictive! On the track it's obviously awesome as well. Just pin the throttle and away you go! Love it!

 

First off downshifts are only supported with a blipper, but can be done at a cost. The point of quickshifters is you do not close the throttle to up shift. The HM shifter is a strain gauge so can be programmed to shift at the right point, only when load is placed on the gear box it cuts the ignition for the programmed period of time giving a clean shift to the next gear. Try one full throttle and you will soon see the benefits.....lol

 

Maybe, but it depends on how you ride on the road i guess..would you think i would benefit from a shifter on my daily commute to and from work...

 

Well I use it all the time commuting or on a ride out. However I bought it mainly for ride outs as I only use the blade to commute once or twice a month. But I have found myself using it all the time. If all you do is commute and depending what you commute. If your stop start traffic all the time then there is probably no point but if you have some awesome roads to blast along then I would say go for it!

 

IMO a QS is pointless for a blade on the road as you don't need to change gear often enough!
I can happily go anywhere using only 2nd & 3rd gear

 

Have you been out for a decent blat on really open / flowing roads on a QS equipped bike then got on one without?
Difference is huge - even heading down motorway slip road, confidence in changes / smoothness is brilliant!

 

Not high on my list of mods either. I'm sure they are great fun and I expect it's like having electric windows in a car, once you've had them it's hard to go without. But not for me just yet.

 

You'd love it MrB tbh it's under rated and IMO THE best mod I ever did to my blade and I've done a few.... I kid you not there is nothing quite like up round the red line with the HM shifter it's like stoners RCV ripping through the gears, there's shifting and THERE'S shifting! Put it like this two bikes same spec one with and one with out you will pull a car each gear over the stock bike EASY! I've proved it time and time again hard on the throttle non Quickshifter bikes stand no chance as each time they dip that throttle they loose ground! Read it and weep that's what I say.....lol

Lol yeah, I have the alloy in my vice just keep forgetting to measure the shifter CPU and mark where to drill the hole....but it's yours.....lol

Well, picked up the blade today and it rides like my old 600fm... +rocket fuel (Jesus its fast)

Pootling/wobbling about town it slips between gears at 2.5-3k without any resistance. Supersmooth
Not quite as smooth when upping the ante and 3rd its a little notchy, so I'll have to watch that one for a bit

For my riding style I prefer to blip the throttle on the down shift, so I may be interested in a QS that had a blip built in... does that exist?

 

your talking about riding on the road , why bother its a waste of time and money . track riding they are a must for the road NOT needed

 

The whole superbike thing is a waste of time on the road mate, 70s the limit if your lucky... You could argue unless racing not needed on track too.. Come on Shane's it's only money, you only live once, I bet if your blade was on the road it would have a shifter on it.....lol

 

i wont ride on the road , apart from my 125 twist and go scooter to go to the gym and give the dog a run , ill be in the car thanks I cant see the point of owning a bike to ride on the road at all

 

Not wrong! Its ok round me if you go out at the right time, year by year Im drawn more towards track..! A few more years and my tax and mot will no longer be required!

 

No I haven't. As mentioned, I wouldn't have to change gear often enough for it to be worthwhile.
