giffgaff have been around for a few years now and have quite a large (and growing) customerbase. Their USP is that they piggyback off the O2 network but don't have a physical customer service presence - issues are sorted out by 'agents' (i.e GG customers who get rewarded for helping other GG customers) and if they can't resolve them then they can be escalated up to 'educators' (GG staff). The lack of bricks-and-mortar retail outlets and CS presence means they can be very competitive on their tariffs.

There are no contracts or subsidised handsets with GG, you just buy goodybags each month for your own mobile. You can set these up to renew on a recurring monthly basis or just buy as and when you need them (although they will expire after a month). You can track everything via the GG website or mobile app.

re: keeping your number - you can port-in your existing number the same way you do if you swapped actual network providers. It takes a few days to arrange but the outage while it swaps over is minimal as port-ins by all mobile providers are generally done by a 3rd party company.

The system works pretty well, imo. I had a couple of technical issues with them, firstly when porting-in my number which was over the Xmas period so took a few days to resolve, and secondly when their data-centre flooded and there was an outage for a good few hours one day. Both issues were resolved as soon as GG could and I was compensated so heavily I've only just started paying for goodybags!

re: iPhone 5 - the new iPhone uses nanosims rather than microsims which giffgaff don't currently provide as they're so new. They'll be providing these as soon as poss but in the meantime you won't be able to use an iPhone 5 on GG until they do.

PS. They're currently debating with the GG community (i.e all users) about removing the unlimited data on the £10 goodybag, either by putting a 750MB cap on that level plus £1/500MB above that & introducing a £12.50 unlimited one or some other options.

Either way it's still a bargain and you have to hammer it to get higher than 750MB and if you do you're not heavily penalised like you are with the rip-off mobile providers suvh as O2.

True, although I expect them to have them within a month or so. Depending on your circumstances you could always xfer to a PAYG in the interim?

A friend of mine is a GifGaf Agent... he has cut down micro-sims to nano-sim size... this can easily be done with scissors/craft knife, and you can also get dedicated cutters if you dont have steady hands.
Then, you need to sand a fraction of millimetre off the back of the new sim, as nano-sims are slightly thinner than micro-sims.

Upgraded the iPad to iOS6, 200 updates but I've yet to see 1! If anyone's seen any do let me know where they are....lol

Ps. The update did force me to up date ALL my other apps too as they were required to work with iOS6, and they are no longer comparable with early versions of iOS.... All sounds very PC/android.....lol

Lol! They're mostly under the hood unfortunately as Crapple are trying desperately to sever links with Google (a bit too desperately given the Maps fiasco).

I'm sticking with iOS5 + Jailbreak as it gives me a lot more than iOS6 and most importantly Google Maps!

The iPad is jailbroken for iOS5.x. They have a tethered JB for iOS6 but only for the older iPads and iPhone 4 and below, so probably not long before a proper JB will be released for 6. However, even when they do release it I'm possibly going to stay on iOS5.

The good news is that Google have submitted their Maps app now, so hopefully Apple will approve it but they might drag their feet for a few months..!

ETA: just seen that the iPhone 5 has been jailbroken so the A6 devices are exploitable. Possibly a couple of weeks before the full iOS6 JB is released, in that case.

Good idea! I had better images of maps on my Spectrum than Apple Maps.... I don't mind Apps but I'd rather the embedded software/apps work as that's what pops up by default and typical apple there's no user settings for default apps...!

Have they approved it already then? Quick work by Apple. They must be running scared!

That's one workaround actually - browse to maps.google.com on your phone and then add the bookmark to the Home screen so you can launch it as an app.
