Just a bit of fun - lots of folk on here tour etc. For me I think its Mugello in Italy - not epic distance but far enough Sure somebody can better that - Portugal mentioned, Gibralter I think too somewhere? If we do a league table should use Google maps from London to the destination to decide it Just to add - taking a ferry is OK, putting it on an aircraft is not!
Furthest I've been would be an extension of a trip to the Pyrenees when I rode down to Marbella, Southern Spain. Stopped in some amazing places on the way down and none of them booked in advance. Turned out to be one of my best biking holidays ever!
Just north of Rome for a wedding and Misano for a MotoGP. Quite fancy taking her round and down Croatia but need to look at logistics, or down to Morocco.
Si - Ferry to Northern Spain with GaryB - he head East, you head south, simples... I've wondered how far East I'd get on my Blade till it stopped working - knowing my luck I'd run out of land before that happened!
No no no nooooo.....don't take a Blade to Morocco, the roads aren't good enough, unless you are a relative of Nick Sanders of course. Went there in March on a Versys 650 and that was plenty fast enough. No, ignor that, please go so we can all enjoy the trip report. Back on topic, for me on this Blade about 1/3rd of down Portugal, but with ferry so not really that far.....
Are we just talking as the crow flies, or do we get credit for the effort involved over shorter distances. It was going to be a Repsol, but he was after a speed record too.
Lol! I wasn't planning on going deep into Morocco but there are a few half-decent roads around. We'd be 2-up with luggage so won't be getting my knee down. I've been on far worse 'roads' in Europe!
Almeria in the south of Spain. And if anything happened when I was there it wasn't my fault. I wasn't even there at the time and it was like that when I found it.
furthest on a bike (R1 not the blade) was Florence in Italy.... funny it felt a lot further from home than south of France? love to do Morocco in style on the cannonball but your talking £££££!! Also not a blade, but think my pal Bruce on his gixxa1000 will smash us all (see link below for details lol)
Know what you mean about Italy seeming a lot further than S.o.France. What surprised me when we were over on the Adriatic coast was how easy it would have been to slip into Croatia as it was only a quick hop round from Venice to Trieste and then Croatia. With a bit more time we would've done it but alas had to get back quickly on that trip due to work commitments. Always a next time, though!
ha ha....evertime i go away i always think - mmm we could have gone that little further into Poland, croatia etc etc - then i remember being crashed out on the tunnel floor back to folkestone totally bolloxed and think! na we maxed out the 8 days we had! lol
I was looking at that early this year. The website with the costs has gone now but it didn't sound too bad considering what you get but obviously not a cheap trip ! One for the bucket list. I was conerned about the roads though. Bart where did you go and just how bad are the roads ?
also looked into it, think off memory about £2k but still had fuel and had to get to spain!! but like you say, epic trip!! have a look here.... http://1000rr.co.uk/events-meetings-ride-outs/2012.htm not sure if the fella ever done it. also when looking into it, some of the roads looked amazing and good quality!
That was what i was looking at... a few of us where going to do it, but with the flights, the run and juice it was coming to £2.5k plus spends...
I did Morocco and back on a £600 FJ1100. The roads are crap! Rounding a bend on a back road and there was a 12" "speed hump" across the road, i dont think it was supposed to be a speed hump, it looked like someone had dumped a load of tarmac on the road and left it. A lot of the roads just stop at the edge of villages and the "road" through is just dirt with HUGE potholes about 2 feet deep in them. I'd love to do it again, but not on a blade, an FJ1200 or something would be nice. My thinking was that if i came out of a bar somewhere and there was nothing left but a frame, i could just walk back into the bar and book a flight home, its only a £600 shitter, at least is not my blade! By the way, i wouldnt think of doing it alone, the people there have very little and stealing stuff is rife, park up outside a hotel to go and see if they have a room, come back out, no tank bag, etc. One time in Bini Melal the guy who owned the hotel showed us into his "secure garage", we looked around to find that he had thrown everyone out of the bar and thats where we left them overnight. Great people, fantastic scenery, cheap hotels, drink (if you can get it, there is one bar in Chefchewen!), food. The cost aint so bad as long as you are sharing, the ride from Calais to Algaciras is a long run but its cheaper than the spanish ferry (what a rip off!!!!!).
