A few threads on other forums about the mars mission but have a guess what it could be?

They say they have found an "earth shattering" discovery!

Curiosity team set to reveal 'major discovery' in Martian soil... just not yet | Mail Online

Loads more info on the net but I rekon they have found micro organisms or to put it simply "life" on mars... so does that mean the answer to the age old question "are we alone" or "is there life in the universe" ?

Looks like NASA are keeping quiet and are not going to say much more for about seven weeks...

Basically, yes. If they've found evidence of even amoebic forms of life on the next planet out then that's a pretty massive pointer to the fact that the utterly massive Universe is liable to be positively teeming with life. Not necessarily bipedal humanoid life but you'd struggle not to imagine that there are multi-celled complex lifeforms out there somewhere.

Found this. For what it's worth.

Whatever Curiosity has found, it is not evidence for life on Mars. It can't be. Curiosity is not designed to look for life. Grotzinger has stated this himself. In a Nasa video about the mission, he says, "Curiosity is not a life detection mission. We're not actually looking for life; we don't have the ability to detect life if it was there."

Following up the internet speculation, Jeffrey Kluger of Time talked to Nasa's Jet Propulsion Laboratory spokesperson Guy Webster and was told, "It won't be earthshaking, but it will be interesting."

So what is the result likely to be?

We know that it comes from the analysis of a soil sample using SAM, the on-board mini laboratory for sample analysis. The smart money is on a detection of so-called organic molecules. While scientifically important, organic molecules do not necessarily mean life.

"Organic" in this context is a somewhat misleading term used to describe chemical compounds made from carbon bonded to hydrogen. They are essential for life, but not necessarily evidence of life because such molecules can be built from simple chemical reactions.

Bummer, so 2.5bn quid and an alien could sneak up on curiosity give it a pat on the back as some kind of extraterrestrial dare and we'd never know....lol

It's a Gixxer not painted white and blue. That's why they're checking and rechecking the results.

They don't want to be proved wrong and made a laughing stock.

You could have a picture of it with Curiosity holding a copy of today's newspaper and I still wouldn't believe it :D

Yeah...lol I think Suzuki are nearing the production count of the C90!

I can't believe hey went 350,000,000 clicks (or whatever it is) and did not take something that can detect life on the red rock! How's it go? That's the dumbest dumb thing a super smart person could do!

Minutes later, curiosity pulled out on the Gixxer claiming he didn't see him.

Fecking 6x6 drivers, think they own the frigging inner planets.

Back on topic I've not followed this subject a huge amount but am interested to find out more like everyone. What ever it is I can't wait to hear

Unless its a invading alien race then feck it not again

Even though that article says the SAM the lab has no capability of detecting life another one I was reading suggests that it can and proberly has found organic matter so maybe there is life of a kind on mars, makes you wonder how those organisms would evolve if they found a way to earth, the moon rocks from way back when they went to the moon are still in isolation so I guess NASA knows there's always a chance they could miss something when looking at these things, I often chuckle at mankind's overconfidence at times when they are walking around on Martian soil.

Nasa do not tell us everything. It annoys me that the American and British govts don't tell us what really is going on. Want something to get your teeth into.David Wilcox at divinecosmos.com he can give you a different angle on this.Absolutely fascinating read both on that website and YouTube at some of his seminars.

I'll have a read, tell you what though you can understand why they don't at times...for example American preppers! Saw some of these nutters on the TV the other night, propper lost it nutters armed to the teeth!

Yeah watched that show myself.nutters some of them.
Sure look how some people got on when the hydron collider
Was about to be switched on, they thought the world was
Going to get sucked into a black hole.

The SAM experiment would probably pick up on chemistry necessary for forming organic compounds. Whether its capable of registering them once they had actually formed into organic matter is debatable. Though I doubt that if it can see the components it wouldn't be capable of taking a punt at the assembled product.
