My 2005 CBR1000RR was supplied by a reputable shop to the previous owner as a track day bike that had been built from an insurance write-off doner machine, six years ago.

Having recently purchased the bike, I'm now going over it to make it ready for next year and I thought I'd look into it's history.

My first idea was to carry out a hpi check onthe frame number to see what I could find out.

This drew a blank as there are only 16 digits and there shoudl be 17. I then went to DVLA and asked them what they could tell me, they also said they couldn't help as there are only 16 digits.

I have all the receipts etc from the original sale and I have no real need to find out the history, but I am curious.

Has the number been 'doctored', has Honda ever made frames with only 16 digits (maybe for oter countries), or is there some other more sinister reason?

If anyone has a 2004/20005 bike, could you compare my number with yours and let me know if it looks similar.

I have erased the last four numbers (for obvious reasons.)

    Any thoughts are welcome.

    Pete

It would be a great help if someone with a 2004 to 2006 CBR would taske a quick look to see if/how their number is different.

Doing the VIN checker and inserting an A after the SC57 doesn't work, but inserting a 3 comes back as correct. Could it be SC573

I'd really appreciate any help with this.

    Thanks.

    Pete

Thanks for that Eyore, strangely your 04 model has AX4M where mine just has 34M. It certainly looks like this is where mine has a missing digit, but what is missing and why is another question.

the 4 is the year and the m is plant that the bike was made. between the sc57 and the 4 is the check digits ...this is where the problem is by the look of it.

I was told that mine is a 2005 model (although the 4 indicates that it was made in 2004.) It certainly looks very different from the one pictured above!
I've bougth it as a race bike, with no V5, so I don't have a registration number. I don't need to find out the history, but I am curious as to where it came from. The dealer who supplied it as a race bike, (six years ago) said it had been built from a written-off road bike.
'If' that is true, the mystery is where has the missing digit gone?

Mines a track bike (although road registered still)

When I was looking the amount that claimed they were 05/04 and were actually older was unbelievable. Even if you do manage to guess the missing number even with the 17 digits its hard to find out information. The police won't provide any information due to personal protection? and the DVLA can't do anything without a numberplate. I was told your best bets a Honda dealer but even thats unlikely.

Thanks for the help Joe. From what I can make out; 'if' the number is correct, there should be a check number before the 4M. There's a pre-set way to work out the check number substituting numerical values for the letters in the sequence, then multiplying them and then dividing by 11. (I haven't made that up, honest!)
Using this formula with my number, the check number comes out at number two. Unfortunately, even inserting a number two in the right place isn't helping check the bike's history. Every check I can do comes up as number not found.
I'm wondering if it's either got a dodgy past or if it's been imported from abroad and there's no UK records for it.
I hate being beaten, but it looks like this one's got the better of me.
You wouldn't think it could be so hard to check if a bike has a bad history.

    Thanks again.

    Pete
