Left work last night, just after a friend warned me about black ice taking him out a few years ago. I decided that it is not worth the risk to me or to the bike. Let a car through into traffic, he was sticking out into the bus lane that I was not supposed to be in... I went around the back of his car.... And the back TOTALLY came around on me. Bike was on the floor facing the wrong way on the road. It just spun up on the white zig zag line... Looked at the spot... No water, no ice... Just feckin cold... R&G Crash Bung took the brunt of the damage. R&G cotton reel has a little scrape as well as the tip of the Scorpion exhaust. Will have to get a new set of crash bungs as the right side one is scraped and looks to be bent. Did it's job though!!!! Engine casings not touched at all!!! Mirror ok, lever ok, bar end ok... Rode the bike home as nothing else was wrong after a quick check... Will give it a thorough looking over this weekend... Took the train this morning. I hate taking the train...
Lucky! Yesterday it was so cold here for the whole morning then a quick shower turned the already -0deg ground to a sheet of ice in a second! Twenty mins later it has gone! Not fun on my big old TDM!
Two wheels versus ice is no contest. You are absolutely right not to take the bike if there is the slightest risk of ice, dosent matter how much of a riding god one may be.
Agreed!! Especially since I have proven that it is possible to lose traction easily in the cold even when there is NO ICE!!!
sorry to hear about your off horrible feeling. I got caught in ice once, riding about 10mph with both feet down.swore never again as its not worth it, especially after a group of bikes came up behind me (all bmws) we hit a frozen puddle about four meters long,.my gixer turned into a grass track bike gilding sideways across it while one of the bmw riders faceplanted real hard.
Glad you came out okay Matrixxx, and to hear the bike fared okay too. The frozen run off from the motorway flyover just outside the village yesterday gave me a quick reminder of why I normally use the front wheel drive car, not the rear wheel drive car this time of year.
I took mine out the other Sunday, had 2 big slides....thought fek that, and came back. It's tucked away now.
wow, sorry to hear J. Makes me feel glad i got away with all my winter commuting on the blade without incident (even in an inch of snow!) I have some new bolts for the R&G crash bungs here. I got them from R&G after a previous set were over-torqued. I never fitted them before i sold the bike. You can have them for nothing as an early christmas present bud. just let me know.
Hey Arthur, any chance of your surgeons name please, I am well impressed with his stitching and have some jeans that need repairing.
Abv how does that work then? Whats the arm like now? They were not going to do mine and asked "do I use it much?" I just said "yeah I do flipping use it thanks! Now get on and fix it!"
Surprisingly it's fine. That was Easter 2011 at Portimao. I broke my wrist at the same time but didn't even realise I'd done my collor bone until I got back, just thought it was a bit sore. I remember standing up having the xray taken and seeing the radiographer wince as the picture came up. They ummed and ahhed about it but didn't operate on that or the wrist. The wrist still isn't 100%. Overall I thought the service was crap.
O1M sorry mate I've gone off subject of your crash! abv mate I just don't get how they can leave it like that? crap NHS too right, one doctor said I was ok just a pulled ligament go home, another wanted to pull my shoulder as he thought it has just popped out the joint, all this was after my x ray, told the last one if he pulled my arm I was gonna knock him out!
Bloody hell sounds like you were quite lucky! Well not but you know what I mean Glad you are ok and the bike seemed to get away without damage
Really glad to hear you are ok mate, which is the main thing. From long past experience, very cold road and cold tyres = same result as ice which is why mine is tucked up for the winter, oh and also because I am an old fart and I don’t like the cold. Early yesterday morning I was walking down The Cut between Waterloo and Southwark and watched a whole bunch of people in front of me go arse over tit like a line of nine pins. I couldn’t see any ice on the pavement but it was like a skating rink trying to help people up. As I am still recovering from my slipped disc operation I was so lucky it wasn’t me. Centrally heated car and seats for me till next spring.
