Got my wheels back from the powder coater and I'm pretty impressed with how they've turned out. The only slight concern is that they've sand blasted the axle tube so where it was all nice and shiny it, and the recesses where the bearings sit, are now matte finish and not smooth. Do we reckon that'll cause any problems?
You better hope the bearings are still a good fit, blasters normally plug/blank off bearing seats and bores, I would be asking the question as to why they didn't
I've phoned them and they say that's the way they normally do it. They've advised me not to hammer the bearings in though. They've told me to put a piece of threaded bar (not sure where I'm supposed to get that) and two sockets on either end with nuts and draw them in together?
Yeah thats the method i would use for putting the bearings back in but it still wont make them fit if the bore diameter has been altered during the blasting. You can get threaded bar in metre lengths at any plumber merchants or electrical hardware store, some diy stores also stock stud bar, 8mm or 10mm dia would be sufficient to pull the bearings in to the bores
I would be having words with the painters mate, yes paint looks great however something isn't right with them not protecting the baring part mate, sounds like they may be covering up a mistake made
A 300mm length should be enough, no need to buy a metre if a local outlet sells 300mm units singularly Screwfix do a pack of 5 Steel Threaded Rods M16 x 300mm Pack of 5 | Screwfix.com
Wheels look good, although when I got mine done everything was masked up really well, guess you'll know once you refit the bearings, are the holes for the disc bolts ok?
yes yes the wheels do like lovely... but to be honest Im more jealous of your fresh rubber...ooohhhh!
They look like they've been sandblasted too. Looking at them it looks like they haven't masked anything when they've been sandblasting them. The masking was only done when they actually did the powder coat. There's no coating in the disc bolt holes.
I honestly don't know, mate. I went to a couple of powder coat places and the first one only had a very very bright gold which I didn't want. This one was much more subtle.
Just be careful when re fitting the discs then as I've heard cases of the threads getting stripped in the wheel and need re tapping out!
