Hi. Just wondered if it's worth forking out on the all new singing & dancing garmin or whether the trusty old Tom Tom with Europe maps parked inside the top of my tank pad will do? Whether a holder is better, waterproof case.... And powering the unit? Seems odd to fit a fag lighter to my pride n joy and I'm worried the misses will be wanting to pack a travel kettle, iron & hair dryer (bless her) I'd rather be spending the cash on new rubber for the return or a few more miles out on my trip Thanks
If you have a Tom Tom Rider ,why not just but a powered mount ,works fine for me. TOMTOM RIDER V2 V3 & URBAN CHARGING ACTIVE BIKE DOCK MOUNT POWER CHARGE KIT | eBay
Thanks eyore. Liking the 'rider' Sadly my Tom Tom is close to sothebys vintage collectors. But still reliable, does what it said on the tin (back then) & owes me nothing. I'm usually a gaget show geek but trip planned for mid march and Christmas has scorned the cash in hibernation. But then, when I'm wanting to navigate several thousand miles in comfort, perhaps I should not have that third pint & buy something shiny to bolt on. O conundrums!
Hi fella, I've got the rider pro (excellent bit if kit) and a power point mounted on the bar's, easy to remove if need be.
Just looking at satnav - have to get myself from the top of the Stelvio to Andermatt, then over to black forrest and up the B500 to Baden Baden then onto EuroTunnel - Know they are not comlex routes, but good to be able to pre-load route of passes etc. you really want to take DOn't think phones are quite there yet, they switch carriers, display text to welcome you etc. receive texts etc. - Seen this and tempted, it would be typical that the one time you really want / need to use it the heavens will open - Any other ideas? 3.5 inch IP45 waterproof GPS navigation with Bluetooth +Free map f motorcycle | eBay
I got the new TomTom wide screen last year,I'm going to take it with me, perhaps it's main use I guess will be getting us in and out of large cities and towns? But I'm sure when I was having a play with it you can put pre loaded routes on it? Got my ideas for power, as some of you know I use that adapter I made for under the seat, but I've an idea to put power in my tank bag so I can keep phone satnav on charge whilst riding.
Gary, this is other option (or the XL version at same price) Halfords | TomTom XXL Western Europe Classic Sat Nav - UK, ROI & WE then you need mount and waterproof bag for it - all possible
I was hoping it would go inside the tank bag map compartment Al? If I wasn't thinking of a tank bag? As I say just for town/cities it does fit like this. Did *cough* 70 mph down the motorway as a test. But perhaps needs that little extra security to the bike
Hey dude how is this sat nav you got? I'm thinking of going for the garmin 660lm ( Cheap Garmin Zumo 660LM with UK & Europe Motorbike Navigation ) but before i go for it some feed back on this would be brill. Cheers .
Hi chinny, to be totally honest I couldn't really tell you how it performs 'under pressure' so to speak. I bought it to replace my old tomtom 510 that I lent to my SIL, the knob managed to spike it somehow and it wasn't worth the repair. I never soley bought it for the bike and with it having the wide screen, personally it wouldnt be my first choice! When I get an itch I do a bit of part time LGV work and thought it would be a handy accessory, lol I ain't had the itch since I bought it. It's got everything and more than needed Lane information Bluetooth for phone etc, the POI are handy. As I said previously it sits on the tank well, but again even though I gave it a little test, it's not my ideal position for it. Im hoping It will go in a tank bag map compartment with the clear screen, 'yet to be purchased' I'm looking along the lines of the Givi tank lock system 14 ltr max, as I would like to have it just for essentials and my DSLR so doesn't need to be massive? or I may see if I can get a stand alone waterproof bag for it to fit in, such as the Givi, and get the hard case Give tank bag? It's a little project under construction at present, but I will update as I get my head round it. Sorry I couldn't give any more constructive info mate.
Well thanks for your honesty Gary , the garmin one (if I get it will sit on the top yokes as I'm not a fan of riding with a tank bag, I brought an Oxford magnetic bag for my R6 think I only used it twice ,just couldn't ride with it on
Was it the issue of its height? That's my main concern, im just stating to get used to getting over the tank! I don't want another excuse, really need to start seeing things in the flesh so I get a better idea. Failing that I'll just get something for the Nav and just make sure I strap the camera bag on top of the Kriega real good.
allblade... I have one of these sat navs, plenty of companies are selling them and putting there name to it... Comes with a car mount as well so quite usefull, if you are going to buy one then it may be better to buy it here in the Uk, more chance of getting of some customer service if there is a problem... heres the link Motorcycle GPS Navigation Sat Nav System from Bluetronics
Deffo the height issue with tank bag for me any way, but best thing to do is if you know anyone who has a tank bag try it for size or better still go to a bike shop & see if they'll let you try one before you buy
Ok I've just ordered the Garmin Zumo 660LM for me bike. Ill post on here once it arrives and its been fitted and let you know what it's like
Great kit, had mine couple of years, 550 before it. Not sure if you're aware mate, but worth getting a Telferizer. Fits straight into your headstock and RAM mount fixes onto it. Bob Telfer is the guy who manufactures them, top bloke, sends it out and you only pay him on receipt. JD
Thanks JD, once it arrives I'll get in touch with him. How would I get hold of him if I need a mount?
Just email him [email protected] mate, give him details of your bike and that's it. Around £32 + p&p. If you Google Telferizer you'll get his website details. JD
Just an update, it looking like the TomTom will be fine for my purpose. Had a spare half hour before the kids horse riding so I spent the time wisely? And dropped into Blackpool Honda. Talking about tank bags etc and he had a Givi T489 in stock, no more to do, he stuck it and me on a fireblade to try it for size. No issues what so ever, although I may move it forward on its plate, just for the extra couple of inches for the belly So I bought it. I said in an earlier post, I was hoping the TomTom would fit into the map area of the bag. Well I got a Brucie bonus, there's a compartment at the front of the bag that unzips, and inside it is an integrated satnav/iPod/phone holder, and it fits a treat. Yet to fit it to the bike, but here's what I'm talking about on the lounge floor. Smashing
Gary, does that 'Silver Bag' that your Tom Tom is in come with the T489 as I can't see it on the Givi website?
