Gone off a dedicated Bike Sat Nav me self, probably going to go with a Google Nexus 7 Tablet mounted on a small Givi Tank Lock bag. Less than £200 and so much more you can do with it when ya away.
I have a givi tank lock bag - it's great... But wouldn't want my tablet in the map viewer... It's not waterproof!! And data charges! Ouch...
Been looking at this one Jimbo. You get a waterproof cover for the whole thing so easy enough to wip on should the heavens open and I'd wager the tablet holder on this particular model is fairly rain proof much as a map holder is or what would be the point of it?
Hmmm so it doesn't run on data like an I phone app would? Excuse the simple understanding. I'm not overly clued up on the techno lol

That's the bag I have... And must admit the tablet holder looks brilliant. Only slight problem, when wet and you put cover on you can't see the screen? Appreciate 90% of time you just pull in / not go out. But on tour you have to progress regardless - and that's when it's needed most?? Also - what kind of battery life do you get off it? And the map holder isn't waterproof at all. It condensates quite bad and soaks your maps. Trust me!!
Yes it works just like a dedicated Sat Nav using just the inbuilt GPS sensor. You can buy a 3G version if you want data and or live traffic updates via 3G but it's not essential. I'm currently researching the best SIM only details for tethering my iPhone 4S to a WiFi only Nexus 7, this I feel would be ideal for me as the iPhone would always be within a couple of feet of the Tablet when I'm out and about anyway so I don't need the added expense of a 3G tablet I don't think.
Don't know about Batt life as I haven't bought one yet but it won't bother me as I'll be fitting a permanent mini USB power supply to the bar area so I can charge whatever I like when on the move with just a charge lead from the Bar area running inside the Tank Bag. I'm sure you can get a waterproof cover that is see through much like a Kids pushchair cover.
The iPhone has a built in GPS too, just use a sat Nav app and away you go, no data charges as it doesn't need wifi or 3G unlike other smart fones. Put it in a waterproof case, and your sorted. The earlier iPhone 1 didn't, but from the 3GS, 4 and 4s to the iPhone 5 include GPS sensor. sinewave, why not just use the 4s and get tomtom Europe or navigon for it? The tomtom maps are continually updated for the life of the app. i have a scala g4 with Bluetooth, the iPhone with tomtom connects to it wirelessly so you can listen to voice directions. You can listen to mp3 music at the same time and also answer or make calls while riding, all wirelessly. Theres a few guys with this set up now, and all are chuffed with it.
Just jumping in here Jimbo-sinewave. I too got the same bag as you Jimbo, it's come with a rain cover, and it's clear, just like a pram cover I guess sinewave. I'll talk more about the bag later Jimbo if I may? Sinewave regarding the power to your bag for charging, really no need to go with mounting to handle bars etc. all you need is the charger to go inside the bag, a cable from the battery with an inline fuse, run it up the front of the seat and into the bag, it will fit snug between the double zips, make sure to put a quick release connector 3.5mm male-female jack plug or similar, so you simply unplug it when you remove it from the bike, no issues with scratching paint? Just wrap the 12 inch or so of cable in the sticky backed foam or similar. Really sorry I haven't got mine up and running as yet, to show you my thoughts.
I'm used to wrappin' 12" about! Hi Si, yes I've thought of just using me iPhone 4S but the gadget freak/Devil sat on me shoulder is urging me to buy a Nexus as it's a much bigger screen for the Nav data, will be useful for Hotel use (emails, loggin on ere to chat 2 U Chumps) and it looks ACE too! A Fool and his money etc etc!
