Just received my HM quickshifter from A W Rudd Motorcycles or as we all know as arthurbikemad from the forum. I have to say thanks to Arthur as it is very rare to find someone who is so helpful, completely honest and great to deal with. He also got me a great deal and gave me all the help and technical advice I needed (sorry for all the emails Arthur). Big thanks , one very happy customer. Anyway back to the HM QS. I thought I would give a basic how to just incase anyone else was thinking of getting one. It was quite a lot of work to fit the whole kit mainly as you need to: 1. Remove the tank cover 2. Remove the fuel tank (to make life easier), 3. Remove the ECU pack and looms from the air filter box 4. Remove the air filter cover 5. Remove the air filter 6. Disconect the upper fuel rail 7. Remove the lower part of the air filter cover 8. lift back the rubber heat guard covering the spark plug coils Then you unplug the coils plug them into the HM SH harness and plug the harness plugs into the coils. Route the cable down the left or right side as you see fit I went down the left. Fit the sensor to the rod (not supplied in the kit and is an extra £15) (I had to cut it down by 10mm to get the 210mm rod length required. Then all you have to do is fit the ground cable to the chasis ground on the right hand side of the bike, It was to short so I spliced in another 10cm of cable. Then put it all back together Took 3 hrs in the end being careful not to break anything. Setup is easy enough. I had a translogic QS on my R1 but this one is so smooth I am amazed, It is the best modification I have made so far, I absolutely love it. Here is a few pics of it fitted:
I know early christmas present to myself lol I just missed having a quickshifter once it was gone and the great thing about this one is £65 for a new loom and change rod and you can put it on your next bike, not that I would ever want to sell the blade I can justify it, really I can !
Thanks for the write up jaime. I've bought one of these for my 07 but just haven't had the time to fit it yet. Hopefully I can fit it with my new group buy GIPRO DS gear indicator
You are very welcome mate, and thank you very much... Sorry I sent you so many emails...lol but I like people to know whats going on. Nice job you've done with the install, the HMS is the BEST shifter on the market and the Plus is the flagship of them all. I have mine on my RR7 as you know and its the best thing I have fitted to the bike, even over FGRT forks, TTX, OZ Wheels and much more.. Your soo right about what you said about missing the shifter and for those that dont think they need full throttle f1 style gp clutchless shifts to get to the local cafe' think again...lol. Any problems you may have just give me a call anytime.. Posted on my HTC Sensation with Tapatalk
Cracking job and write-up mate, these are by far the best on the market, but sadly expensive as well, cheapest I've seen is £375 for the HM plus On the other hand they are stand alone so no need for a commander.
The Bazzaz quickshift module is around £330 and reviews are it is a better unit than the HM QS and it can also be used as a stand alone system
Got mine from Jim @ SlingShot Racing for £345 including a rod & postage. Slingshot Racing Preston|Race Bikes for Sale|Track Bikes for Sale|Yamaha|Honda|Kawasaki|Suzuki|Motorcycle Racing Bikes The only thing with Jim is, he can be a little forgetful, so you may have to remind him. I had to remind him to send a receipt a couple of times. Also I'm told your best off ringing & speaking to him for a quick response.
Thats a very very good price, Cheapest I could find was £380 + £15 for the rod delivered online, Going to HM direct was £408 all in, Arthur beat those prices by quite a bit but I would contact him direct for a price as I would not like to presume the price he got was available to everyone as I think he got one for his bike and another customer as well. Also I got the kit next day from arthur and he did not need reminding lol + he really did help me out with tech support etc. I was going for a Dynojet kit, but after my recent PCV failure I wanted one that did not need the PCV to work, the HM being stand alone was a perfect choice. Also I have yet to find a bad review of one of these shifter also was talking to one of the front runners in the BSB 1000 superstock and he seriously rates them, which is good enough for me.
The Bazzaz unit is very good (so I am told and read) and offers programable shift times for each gear, no one on track has ever requested that the HM requires different kill times for each gear, in short its just not required. The HM Quickshifters uses a strain guage in place of a switch unlike the Bazzaz, the Bazzaz needs a push or pull type switch to activate the unit, a major down side over the HM and imo flaws the Bazzaz from the start. I think Bazzaz has put alot into PR in the last year or two and are trying to take the market from DynoJet, they seem to be doing well on track AMA etc but IMO lack UK support and Dyno centers, not a problem for some but here in the UK the Bazzaz has some way to go I feel in regards to support etc. The HM shifter is (some PR from HM) used by 41 of the 42 Moto2 bike now in MGP i've not seen many miss a gear yet...lol Im not putting the Bazzaz down and have had little to do with it so its unfair of me to comment too much but the HM shifter is the total Bizz!
The HM strain gauge is meant to be best way to go but compared to the Bazzaz push/pull switch there is nothing in it. ( I dont see racers complaining lol.) The adjustable kill times are very useful in setting up changes through the gears. 2nd to 3rd is a hell of a lot different time wise to 5th to 6th for example. Ive played with my set up/kill times and managed to tweak a very nice feeling Q/S between gears. Having tried the HM system compared to the Bazzaz, I reckon the Bazzazz has the edge. As long as the units are well made/designed you cant go far wrong with either TBH.
I hear many good things about Bazzaz and your on the money as you have tried them all, I guess if the HM had gear pattern shift times then it would be perfect, its a shame the Bazzaz only has the software interface over the lcd hardware interface like the HM as then setup times would be quick and easy like the HM, unless I miss read the Bazzaz shifter bumph.. I do wonder if Bazzaz will do the "king of all ecu's" that just has it all, after all the site now has more add on units than you can poke a stick at...lol Posted on my HTC Sensation with Tapatalk
Ray Thinking of getting a quickshifter, are you really pleased with yours? Noticed that you are on the Surrey/Hamphire/Berkshire boarder, I'm in Camberley, would it be possible to meet up so that I could have a look at the quickshifter. Cheers Rich
Rich, You are more than welcome to have a look once I've fitted it mate. Having a 1yr old son, it's proving difficult to find time to fit it Thanks
Just a little more info for the thread, and another time for me to big up the HM again..lol I see a forum mate in the US has changed his rearsets and needs to change the push sensor to pull on his Bazzaz, they want $250.00 for the sensor yet the whole package is only $375.00? I know that most would never swap the HM from bike to bike should you sell or change rearsets but thought it worth a post as the price for the sensor was so high for the Bazzaz!
Well I managed to fit mine this weekend. Like jaimeHRC it took me roughly about three hours to do. Fitted my GIPRO DS at the same time, but like I said in that thread, I couldn't test the unit as the battery was dead :frusty: Battery all charged now, unit setup for compression only & static tests completed. So when I get some free time I can go and test both
I have had chance to go out for a long ride with it fitted now and I am so impressed with it very, very smooth and no missed gears or false neutrals and the Gear Ind is fantastic too.
