Here's a mate I go out regularly with in the summer, he has an inch chicken strip, and he's the quickest bloke I know:

Me on my old Daytona, i always had chicken strips and got my knee down a few times:

With the blade, had my last of chicken strip taken off after the cross gates road on the last welsh run, it was the slower, more tight corners that did it and very warm tyres, but have never had knee down on the blade?
At the end of the day, quickest guys I know on the road still have a decent strip left, and they aren't arsed.

    Thanks, mate :)

I changed how I ride in the last year. I used to be obsessed with hanging off as much as possible, trying to get rid of my chicken strips and trying to get my knee down (which I've never managed). Last year I stopped doing that and concentrated on putting more input into the bars with my arms on a flat plane and it changed my speed immediately. I now hang off much much less and I'm much more comfortable and a lot quicker than I used to be.

All I have to do to air brake is sit up, all my extra width from where I have put weight on has the same effect as a parachute opening from the rear......mind you the thighs are fairly wide as well...loads of air brake potential there lol

Barney, there was a bloke on an r1 on the way to Hereford on the 49 last summer. I was following him for a while, and on one corner he did a drossi leg out before braking, must have been doing all of 60. I very nearly fell off the bike I was pissing myself that much... Overtook him on a left hander with my thumb up lol.

    LOL!!! :D

I hate seeing people doing the monster hang-off when there's absolutely no need to. It genuinely makes my toes curl with cringeyness.

Wow - that's a lot of answers. I think that I should have maybe explained myself a little better - I'm not trying to get rid of the chicken strips (although I do keep an eye on them out of curiosity) I only mentioned them as an example of a way that you may check to see how far you are leaning. I'm just interested to see if there is a way of figuring our how far you are leaning and I thought that someone may say something like 'Yes that's easy - Maximum lean is 55 degrees. 1mm of C-strip = 2 degrees of lean; so if you have 10mm of lean then you are 20 degrees off 55 so you are leaning at 35 degrees.' THAT WAS ALL MADE UP IN MY HEAD PRE-BREAKFAST - I'm hoping that someone doesn't see that and think it's an actual formula :).
Maybe I shouldn't have mentioned them at all, and reading back on my original post saying 'actively trying to get over as far as possible' does make it seem like I'm trying to get rid of them. I'm not, I just want to learn where my limits are, and you can't find that out without testing yourself.

    Good answers though people. :)

It's just started snowing. Won't be going out today then :(. I am test driving some cars though - that's for a whole other thread...

There was a dude in my garage on my 1st track day getting his knee down with ease (that was the only reason I did one to start with) but had an inch strip. I was off the edge and it done my head in for half the day until I cracked it on padock.

I go off a 55 easier than a 50? Hang off the bike a fair bit, but that's how I feel comfortable,, but don't think strips are any indication of how quick you are.

    Don't worry about it - I don't. But then, I don't have any :) lol

I've currently got a 407 that I've had for 5 years and put 95k on. I've enjoyed it but I'm looking for something a bit smaller as I'm no longer doing the motorway mileage. I'm testing a DS3, Alfa Mito, Megane and maybe a Nissan Juke. I've sat in them all but not driven any yet. However, this all has to happen after we buy a new vacuum as ours just died (the smell of burning electrical goods first thing in the morning isn't as appealing as you might think).
I may start a 'What 2nd hand car thread' :); or maybe a 'What new hoover' thread ;)
