I know 2 of the owners mentioned here - 1 has had to buy a new sump on bike less than year old, other off to see dealer as his 136 mile old bike gone rusty round sump plug
my da got rid of his r1200s as it was constanty giving him grief and the dealer seemed not to be able to sort it.was in the shop more than on the road, they arnt what they used to be.
The 2012 I had in Nov last year to fit the LE OZ wheels was cover in corrosion most shockingly the ECU fitted on top of the air box has cooling fins all over it, it's made from bare aluminium and the fins are arranged in a way that water is caught in between them, this ones done 1500 miles and the ECU was WHITE with corrosion powder, same as many of the fixings etc etc, the owner NEVER rides it in the rain so it's only down to washing, he also using top brand cleaning agents! Like to see one that gets used in 10 years time! Not for me how ever good it maybe.
BMW UK responded to ask customer who had to replace sump to speak to UK service manager. Will let you know what happens.
never knew they suffered with corrision problems they sound bad, well like some have said this has got to get them to listen.
Must be a faulty batch of steel as I remember and so will Ken in the early seventies Vauxhall had a viva which was starting to rot as soon as you left the showroom and as I remember this was linked to something to do with the steel I of course may be way out on this and it was purely the fact that it was not treated but BMW I can't believe they would source rubbish components .
SLight change on this - mate with 130 mile old one called his supplying dealer who responded immediately to say 'bring it in and we will replace it' - so the duff batch would appear to be true - other mate who had to pay 250+ to replace his is now hoping for a refund / credit note!
I've recently also got a hankering for a S1000rr, I know the headlights are damn ugly but the rest of the bike is pure art and it is up there with the best of the current batch of bikes. I've got a cheeky 6 months to think about a decent van and keeping the Blade or a shite van and an S1000rr.
If I was to get an S1000r it would have to be the 2012 one, the MK1 is gutless for the road with a lack of 'shove' where you want it in mid range. Annoyingly they cost a fortune and cost of servicing the thing / parts / repairs a worry as lots is BMW dealer only - find out the hourly rate before you sign on the line Quite a few turn up with tiny mileages 2nd hand which I find odd.
