Firstly I have done a search of the forum and I can't find where anyone has asked this before - apologies if someone immediately sends me a link to an answer I've got a zumo 660 to fit to my RR6, I've got the telferiser fitted to the hesd unit, but I'm wondering if its ok to lift off the plastic cover of the petrol tank (shelter as its called in the service manual) and route the wiring underneath it towards the battery? I won't be using the included headphone and microphone leads so they'll be taped up and stashed out of sight somewhere, but if anyone has any imagery of similar fits, or has a better routing solution I'd appreciate it. Hello Pete, I wired my TomTom all the way back to the number plate wire, having put a R&G tail tidy the wire had already been broken in to. This also means that it only has power when the ignition is on. Had no problem with the wire being under the tank cover. This is on a rr8
Virtually all the bikes wiring runs under the Tank/Tank cover so there will be no problem as long as you follow existing installation protocols and ensure all wiring is zip tied nicely allowing for flex at the headstock for bar movement and nothing is allowed to hand down and touch anything hot.
I have a basic sat nav with mini USB socket and run cable to side of air box / tank cover. I have a switched feed like others have said. What I need is something to put over end of cable when not in use to stop it going rusty. Need to get some clear tape (venture shield off cut!) to make it waterproof. Has a ram mount ball on headstock
Dunno why you all go under the tank; Just connect it to the sidelight power in the indicator/sidelight feed, no long wire runs and it's switched with the ignition. I did this on my 05 (but that was to dipped beam head lamp) and also now to the side light on my 09. Connect to the sidelight side of the connector that way its only the short bit of cable to the indicator/side light to replace if you need to. Watch you don't connect to the indicator for obvious reasons!!!!
Gregr, My reasoning for going under the tank is because of a fear of buggering up anything electrical if I start cutting into wiring. If I had an idiots guide to which wire to splice into (preferably with really big pictures and captions) I'd think about it, but the last two bikes I've had have both just had the satnav wired direct to the battery. I always remove it when I leave the bike. If you've got a photo of your wiring connection I wouldn't mind a look. You never know I might just try it! Thanks to all for the replies though.
Understand where your coming from there Pete. Haven't got any pictures to share but here's a quick description, find the wire that goes up to the indicator around the front fairing headlight area, best take the screen off to help free up access, you will find a 3 way connector which should have on the Indicator side of the connector a Black and Blue wire, a green wire and a Light Blue wire. Green is the earth/ground. Light Blue is the +12volt to the indicator bulb, the Balck and Blue wire is the +12volt to the position/side light. You can verify this if you disconnect the plug, use a multimeter set to volts dc stick the black lead in the grenn connector then test the Black n Blue with the ignition on it should show +12v on the multimeter and zero with ignition off. The Ligh tblue will only show +12v when the indicator switch is operated with ignition on. Connect your sat nav positive to the Black and Blue wire, the earth/ground can be connected to the Green wire but some prefer to go back to a good earth connection on the frame. There's a good one on top of the gearbox under the tank.
