i,ve got a 10 year old gttdi golf and love it. its not worth a fortune but drives like its half its age reasonable tax nice bit of torque and great on fuel especially the 6 speeders. and as andrew said they can give great performance with a remap 130/150 models to about 170/190. would love a newer one but it still ticks all the boxes and kids are keeping it constantly dirty inside.
Thanks Rocket I'm going to see both a golf gt tdi 150, and a BMW 330d this weekend. Both around the same price. I had a VW Bora gt tdi 150 about 2 years ago and loved the torque and feel of the car. Never drove a Diesel BMW before though.

my mate at work has an older 95ish 525d touring and the engine is a peach. not the quickest car in the world but the motor howls when you drive it hard. sounds sweet.
That's how I went through 7 cars in 2 1/2 years after I sold my first 06 sti. I just couldn't find something that could give me the same feeling this side of £25k. The engine and handling is what I look for in a car and it had both in abundance. I'll just have to wait till things improve financially again before I get the car I want again. In the meantime I'll have to get something that has descent enough shove, economy, and is reliable enough for the millage I do.
Audi A3 TDi sportback 180bhp.... Kept up with my 300bhp S3 up to almost 140mph but it was remapped that or Golf GT tdi so you have the recaro's so it's still a pleasant place to spend time

It was my Subaru Impreza STI mate. Really loved the car. It was my second of the same model. If only I could afford to run 1 I'd still have it. But £100 a week just to get to work is a bit too much for me. If I can find a way I will have another.
If you don't need a boot, get a gas coversion. Should work out cheaper. I agree, £100 per week is a small mortgage mate. or some fantastic holidays.
When we had our 3rd (and last child) we decided we needed a big car for all their pushchairs & shyte etc. Mrs wanted a 4 x 4 but there was no way I was going to be driving a car that handles like a Pissed up Pig on a Cake Trolley with an av mpg of 20 or less. I said I want something that's good to the gallon, handles well and has a good torque curve. She throws a strop and says, "do what ya want then, you always do anyway!" Anyway 2 weeks later when I arrived home with this, she soon changed her tune and loves it! 265 bhp, massive 3 litre diesel torque, 7 speed Flappy Paddle gearbox, 0-60 in 5.9 secs, 160mph and 35-47mpg depending on how it's thraped!
Sorry to hear your dilemma and some good points made. You can't go far wrong with a C or E class Mercedes, as long as its been serviced it will go on for ever. The driver that has been picking me up from Frankfurt airport for the last 16 years has a diesel E class withover 400k on the clock and is about 8 years old,its sweet as a nut and still fly's up and down the autobahn everyday. Its nice to have a nice shiny new car, but, it has its downsides. I picked up my brand new E class AMG sport saloon on the 11th, drove to Newcastle for a meeting the following morning, parked it carefully in a safe place in a car park and when I returned some bastard had smashed into the passenger door and buggered off. I hadn't even had it for 24 hrs. I was well pissed off and struggled to say anything without swearing for a couple of days. I parked it at Heathrow this week and couldn't give a stuff what happened. Hi there, I feel your pain I like cars too but to be honest I wouldnt worry, most people where i am cant drive anyway so having a half way decent vehicle is a waste of time. Go for a cheap but practical diesel but with a bit of poke so at least you get to satisfy the 0-40 turbo bit. What you save in petrol as you get more for your money you get to spend on the car! For sheer looks you still get to look at the bike !
Know what you mean David my workmate has a gleaming Audi TT checks it meticously everytime he gets in an someone at dinged it in our car park he went apoleptic so much so he hardly uses it for work now,you gotta strike a balance though havig a nice motor your allways gonna run the risk of some knobhead dinging it or worse keying it.
Got rid of my 340bhp Impreza WRX last year after spending around £10k on it. Used to do trackdays at Snetterton every couple of months and it was my baby for 4 years but just couldn't live with the 20mpg anymore - my 8 mile a day journey wasn't enough for it even to warm up and it drained the fuel in traffic. Do miss her but now have a diesel astra (boring family wagon) with 200bhp which suffices until i can get out on the bike the next time. Reeeeallly want an Evo 10 to scratch that itch now though.. as well as the bike of course, lol!
