Yes it does but if you get nicked for incorrect size or spacing they can remove the plate from you and issue the bike with a Q plate, no going back.
To be honest you'd be very unlucky to lose a plate due to sizing issues. What the DVLA and the Filth hate most is Knobs who can't afford a decent plate using hieroglyphics, miss-spaced letters/numbers or strategically placed black screws to make a plate say sumat it doesn't. Even then you'd need to get nicked a few times for it to escalate to that stage!

You learn sumat new every day! I didn’t know you only had the right to display it or they can revoke if you muck around with the plate size. What I did know is that you can get a legal short plate at 4”x14” with BS markings. L has one on her car with 99 plus three initials and my mother has the same size on her car with 65 plus two initials. You can’t have that size plate with any more than 5 legal size numbers/letters as it won’t fit. I have been trying to buy No5 plus my three initials for quite a while now, but the current owners keeps pissing around, something to do with it being their late father’s plate and one family member wants to sell and the other doesn’t. If it ever goes through I plan to put it on my blade and when I am gone my oldest son can have it as he has the same initials as me. Interesting what some have said about small plates with less digits, does that mean if I had only 4 digits I could have a smaller plate on the blade and be legal?

Ian, Thanks that makes interesting reading, and also reading the link also poo poo's my other idea of fitting an ‘old style’ black and white plate if I get the cherished plate I am after.
From memory a vehicle has to be first registered before 1972 to be able to display a Black un White plate
