Well I decided to get out this morning for a quick ride and it was a bit hairy. Just very little grip from the tyres. Had a full - on snake on under braking and lost the back end coming off a roundabout. Decided to go home at that point
How early was it - with the clock change last week give it time to warm up out there - was cause of many a problem at Donny ie. what is 09:00 was 08:00 just a week before
There's a lot of grit washout around at the moment too. Because its been 'so' dry, it's not being washed away good and proper. The draft from passing vehicles is leaving bands of it a couple of feet wide at the road side. Makes left handlers a bit interesting.
Got to agree. I'm just back in from a little sprint, and even with the temps now up at this time, the road salt is a real issue. I just held back and used the ride as a bit if an excuse to put a few miles on the bike.
This was the main road leading out of the village yesterday. there are places further up the hill, where cars are parked all day and night that the grit extends, this deep, this far out around them, making it only a foot or so off the divider. Hate to say it but its going to need a couple of days pissing down to make a dent in it. I don't get why they've continued to spread the bloody stuff when it's been bone dry and there's sod all moisture to freeze into ice.
when I was out at 9 theis morning my back end come right out too, I called myself a plonker for being too heavy on the gas then plondered on. glad I did as it turned out a great day and we were really blowing the cobwebs(and some ear drums) out.
Grip is ok around Spalding and Peterborough. ...... had a blat this morning and all is well! apart from me being a little rusty! Must give myself a good spray with WD40 before I hibernate this year!
Been out a couple times, but have noticed the tyres are still cold even after 15 miles. So keen to give it the berries
roads round here were ok, salty but had no problems with grip. was only out half hour though and fingers were going blue so i went home for some tinkering instead
In fairness mate, I know that. I've been riding all winter. And yes it's hard to get heat into the tyres, but common sense says that you adapt your style to suit. Our rubber is still relatively sticky, that's why they only last a few k's. My point is that we now have, what constitutes, a beach taking a fair proportion of the available surface away from us so without the ability to see around corners even the most adapted technique is tempting a front end wash out. Personally I don't give a toss about the salt, that's just a wash when I get home but dumping the hundreds of tons of coarse sand with it on dry Tarmac night after night even if the temperature is below zero is pointless for any other reason than to be seen to be making an effort and it creates a potential death trap for any vehicle you can fall off.
Agree .If you think about it over the past 10 weeks there has been thousands of tons of grit mixed with salt and additives and whilst it looks like its either in the middle of the road or at the side clogging up the gutters and drains most of it is ground into the small crevices within the road surface and when these are full the grit sits on top next time you are walking take a very close look and you will see all the very fine ground in dust and that's why there is no grip. What we need is Three full days of very heavy rain and then no frost.
