One thing I've never had is breakdown cover. Perhaps tempting the worst now I've posted this up but anyway... Many a time I've got home from work, nice evening and that, and thought right I think I'll get the bike out and go for a quick blast around North Wales say. I've often thought to myself, while out in the sticks on my lonesome what do I do if the bike packs in, fails to start, get a puncture or whatever. What would you do in such an eventuality, does anyone take out breakdown cover either part of your annual insurance or seperate cover?
For the sake of £40-£50 it's worth taking it out. I'm covered as a person. Ie any vehicle I drive/ride is covered
I wouldn't particularly want to ride without it. A car's not so much of a problem but I wouldn't want to have to sit around in the roadside trying to arrange getting picked up. Mine's just part of my AA car policy. I'm covered on my bike too. Wasn't expensive and could well turn out to be worth it one day. I really don't want to find out the hard way.
Check your cover scooby, the free cover from MCN is RAC and so basic it,s not worth having?? I have cover with the RAC for any vehicle I'm in or on when it brakes down. I wouldn't want to be without, you only need a puncture?
Like others on here I've got RAC cover which covers u in any vehicle as driver or passenger. I also carry with me this stuff in my back pack as I don't wanna wait for an hour for someone to come and repair a puncture which I can do on my own. Have used it twice so far once at home & once when I was out , but I've used to use this a lot when I was a recover driver
where you guys getting your cover AA just quoted me £99 for breakdown and recovery i have free RAC cover with MCE when i couldn't start flat battery they were great came out started me , then followed me to petrol station and started me again after i filled up but really want recovery for peace of mind
I have personal cover,so covers bike plus my car and whenever I travel in someone elses car. I am with Rescue My Car £53.90, price is I believe based on certain factors but I believe one criteria is the age of your newest vehicle.
Got personal cover through the AA. Check your cover as lots of the "free" policies with insurance companies, and I think the AA and RAC don't cover your for problems within 10 miles of home.
You may also want to check what you get with your bank account a lot the time you get free AA or RAC in with it! Not sure on what type of cover you get tho just a thought.
After having a bunch of utterly sh*te experiences with the RAC (like being left on the side of the motorway in the freezing cold for three hours cause they 'couldn't see' my bright yellow Husaberg and various other 3+ hour waits) I told them I wouldn't have another year if they paid me. Then I stumbled across this on MoneySavingExpert: UK Car breakdown recovery insurance the cheap way | AutoAid Breakdown £39 a year, covered on any vehicle you're on/in. Only caveat is that you have to pay the recovery company that comes out to you (which they arrange) by card/cash at the time of the incident, and then you claim back later. Claimed back £120+ in my first year, no qualms from them whatsoever. Couldn't recommend them more.
got it through my mce policy and pretty sure im covered by aa as well. never had to use it thankfully. about 20 years ago had an old Norton, back tyre went, was pushing along country road in west Lothian when an aa rep drove by. signed me up and then I had to get to nearest phonebox. (another mile pushing)then phoned up and said I,d joined that morning got home eventually.
Thanks for your comments, some useful food for thought. To save on time consuming searches and quotes, what are the usual suspects like for cost and service such as RAC, AA, Green Flag etc? Any outsiders that come recommended. I'd probably now look at covering the bike and car for breakdown and recovery or would it be cost efficient to go for the personal cover. As you can tell I've never had cover on anything so I'm totally clueless but now I've started this thread something tells there's a problem waiting to happen.
I've contacted my insurance for a quote and they're quoting £33 for standard cover which covers; Breakdowns more than 1 mile from home Transport of vehicle to home Cost of alternative transport/overnight accom. For £50 they give the above plus home assist. One thing I noticed in the TCs is that the cover is void if the bike is non-standard unless delclared and agreed with insurers. Just a heads up for you all incase you aint decalred all your mods, knowing how insurers try and avoid anything that involves giving you something back for your layout. How does this compare with what you have and what other companies can offer?
had breakdown cover for about 10 years and never needed it yet. Ha famous last words I have personal breakdown cover, have everything other than Euro or Home start and costs me £104 for me the wife and added my mum on there 2. covers you not the car/bike so always been happy with that and I'm with the RAC
