Hi guys, has anyone changed to 120 70 17 + 180 60 17 ? bigger contact patch, some of bsb teams have switched to this size rear but would it feel too 'peaky'? get a discussion going here so I can read it before tonight, when i'm thinking of buying! haha. EDIT: Road use EDITED 2: My OH was thinking of getting them for the blade, but I am currently on a 50, I'm thinking 50 to 60 is too much, maybe different if i were on a 55 :-/ right way of thinking? Hi mel... i was going to go 55 rear, but i'm staying with a 50... it's booked in fri for new hoops. I'm happy with the 50 as is.
How would be going to a 180 rear profile with a 60 side wall make a bigger contact patch. Having a 190 with a 50 or 55 side wall give you a bigger contact patch? hope that makes sense, and hope i'm right. for the edit I was saying the above if you have a 190 rear as standard and not 180. if you have a 180 as standard then the 50 or 55 rear would give a better contact patch. again if that makes sense, taller side wall will mean less meat on the tarmac. and having a 190 as mines does again gives more meat on the road.
Nope, still sticking with the Metzeler M5 mateā¦. they are a great tyre, sticky on the outside, hard in the middle for touring. Marvellous! Everyone i've recommended them to, has also stayed with them.
simpliest way to look at it. 190/50 has a very stready and uniform curve to it,basically the same contact patch no matter the bike position.makes for very neutral turn in and gives better high speed stability when upright. 190/55 has a steeper profile,fast turn in,bigger contact patch when bike is leant over=more grip+stability. more twitchy at higher speeds when upright,and will (depending on tyre+compound) wear out,square off quicker in the centres. didn't know some of the BSB teams had gone to 180's,sounds a bit wierd tbh!!!! 180 on a 6" rim will be very flat as they are designed for 5 or 5.5" rims i thought,so the 60 ratio might cancel out that,would stick to 190's myself though.
Oh dont ask me.. this all came from a convo last night with partner and tyre shopping.. advice has been helpful none the less. I am going to have a look at the M5's that Si recommends, and bend his ear a bit more i think. my preference is to stay with my tyre size. I get the bike over well easy, dont need it to turn in faster, better the devil you know
If you like fast riding, want to be covered when it rains and able to do some serious track days then I would recommend the Michelin Power 2CT. I found that the 55 feels more like falling off a cliff into a corner lean and the 50 more progressive and stable. Just my opinion tho...
Yeah staying with 50. i know it. I hate tyre shopping, too many different opinion, although they all do help, so what does everyone else have? help please? havent done a track day yet, dont like other idiots round me, although i seem to have no problems hooning round the lanes. weird.
Hi Mel, I've got Dunlop Sportsmarts with the 55 profile rear, good tyre but i haven't used them on a trackday. Had Pilot Power 2ct's on my 600rr, good on the road and ok up to the low to middle of inter's on a td. What may feel good to me may feel bad to you, depends on what you want from a tyre, how you ride and how you like a tyre to feel.
Running pilot power pure at the mo but told that they have been discontinued. Ran two sets of 2CT before that and couldn't fault them tbh. Same boat as you just can't get my head around the possibilities. Interestingly I've had two people recommend the 180 60 17 profile for fast road and track. Apparently quickens the steering and very stable in the corner. Does sound extreme to me tho. Leaning towards Pirelli SP but not 100% yet and mibbe 190 55 17
pilot power or power pure for me depending on how much spare cash I have. pures are my favourite, their official website doesnt say anything about production stopping on them?
Pures are apparently being superseded by pilot power 3. Better grip wet or dry and 20% better durability. This is claimed by Michelin tho. Pures not well received and being discontinued less than two years into their run can't be good.
think a lot cant get on with them due to the fact they have a more triangular shape to them which helps them fall into corners.I like them as they seem to tip in like the race intermediates.
Not too bothered about wear time, want lots of grip though. will do some searching through the forum at other threads i think then make my mind up. thankyou guys, you are very helpful
Not sure about a 180 on a 6" rim, as said earlier it is designed for a 5.5" rim. Whilst looking for some secondhand track tyres at Brands BSB round last weekend some of the superstock guys were running 200/60 profile. My preferences is 190/55 and have been running that successfully for the past 4 years on both the blade and zx10, with Pirelli supercorsa and 2CT
Just my opinion again.... The Pirelli Diablo Ross Corsa is probably the stickiest road tyre out there. I loved having them on my RR7 but the centre is too soft for my aggressive riding, well more too expensive to change the rear twice as often as I have to using 2CT
I've just ordered pirelli diablo supercorsas for the front and back, staying with a 190/50 on the rear... Should be nice and sticky when upto temp
