This is my sons new bike; its an 07 R1 & was bought in "as new" condition having only covered 1700 miles. I took it out for a try yesturday; nice bike. I found the seating position & shape of the tank much better than the Blade; gives confidence. The engine on the Blade however is much stronger in the low & mid range & "nicer" to ride as a result.

Sharing bikes with my lad is a very cool thing!!

Nice. I nearly bought an '07 one of those in white with red livery.

Just needs a rear seat cowl and Acrapovics.
You can also get R&G upper & lower crash bungs for that.

Apart from being light on the front, how does it compare at speed?

I only had a plod around so cant answer that yet. Low down the engine feels like a 600, but you can feel the power build as the revs increase.

Thats probably why they change to the Crossplane a year later. Now i'd give one of them a good spanking.

not sure he said it was light on the front? if anything i think the front end is better (bit more planted / not so plush for b roads) on the yam than the blade.

lovely bike that though mate, cool for you and your son to both be riding bikes together. your spot on about low and mid range power delivery the r1 doesnt have any, but get it to 10k and it goes bonkers, totally different ride to the blade (which is so good and has so much poke it can make you a bit lazy gear change wise) and imo can be very rewarding to give a good hammering.

like you say, big 600 really. not for everyone but i certainly like mine ;)

Nice bike for your boy mate, get him to sign up on this site www.YamahaR.co.uk • Index page a few guys have this make & there are always people selling bits and the guys do have a lot of knowledge too, the banter can be a bit ott but generally a good bunch on guys&gals.
