The chain on my 2012 has pitted really badly. I noticed it at the first service and mentioned it to the dealer. He told me that "the OEM chain was very good quality not sure I agree. I made sure it was well lubed with chain wax and rubbed some WD40 over the side plates to try and protect it. Looking at it in the garage just now I swear it's getting worse. I never had an problems with the original on my 600RR. The only water my bike sees is when I clean it!

Has anyone got any tips to stop it rusting/pitting?

Or had any similar issues with their new bike?

Sorry Sinewave all tucked up for the night now I'll get a couple of pic's in the morning.

The side plates are just going rusty and pitting.

Not had any problems with mine, some 4000 ish miles and some very wet ones as well. Always used Wurth dry chain lube and not cleaned the chain once yet.

Ask your dealer to send a pic to Honda see if they will cover under warranty (unlikely)

It's a Gilles chain adjuster with optional paddock stand lifter fitted.

If the chain is cleaned and oiled properly it should give a good account for its life, I guess it's all depends on one persons idea of what maintainence to another's?
My chain is the last thing to be touched after a ride out.
Usually it's wash the bike, blow the water off the technical bits, including the chain. then a Parafin rag run round a few times, clean the sprocket etc as required, then a clean dry rag over the chain ensuring its dry, and then re spray the Wurth wax onto it.
Always worth checking the chain, even when parked up, doesn't take long for the elements to start the attack.
I note you said that you put WD40 onto the links, WD40 Actually absorbs moisture, it doesn't repel it, technically your trapping the water in the chain.

    I wouldn't put wd40 on a motorcycle chain, shipmate. I've heard it's not good.

I've had similar issues with chain wax not protecting the chain against corrosion, I find chain lube a lot better (currently use Motul which seems good stuff). As above, WD40 not good for protecting side plates.

Just changed my OEM with about 18K on it, it wasn’t too bad it had some major tight spots. Normally my chains are perfect but perhaps the previous owner neglected it a little. Decided to get a Tsubaki Gold X ring this time.

After cleaning the chain and allowing to dry I wipe ACF50 on the side plates and only lube between the roller and inner plates and little bit on the o/x rings themselves. I’ve got 20k+ out of previous OEM chains w/o corrosion.

Mines used 12 months a year in all conditions, just spray Castrol racing chain lube on it every 3 days always while the chain is hot, gets blasted with a pressure washer each week, not even adjusted this one after 12K, think you guys are pussying them too much :D

I use wd40 for cleaning only and even then it's once a year before going by for winter, after chain is cleaned and dried off Then use a couple of coats of wurth chain lube for protection on links and sides. Then once season comes round the scot-oiler is the only thing that's used to maintain the chain till winter again.

Not had any issues with rust but everyone will have there own little ways of doing things.

Wurth do some quality products tho expensive but quality!
