Right people, I am at some point on the look out for a new desktop. it will be used for my daughter to play her Sims 3 on, forums, itunes, making music for the car but mainly for me to edit and Burn to DVD/Bluray or USB/External HD Go Pro vids, Family movies etc,,,

If I look at something like this
Costco UK - Apple iMac 27.3 inch 32GB RAM MD096B/A 3.2GHz + Wireless Keyboard and Mouse

Other than Anti Virus software? Video editing sofeware. What changes would I find and need to buy from being a Microsoft man for the past 15+ years

The linke is the top of the range imac from costco and may not be going that expensive.

I currently have a 4-5yo Mesh gaming desktop, 8 gig ram, old Phenom 2 Processor, old graphics card, 8 gig of ram. ok keyboard, ok mouse, 1-2 YO 23" LED screen running Windows 8. I would love a blu ray burner. I bought one for my PC after the scan I found said my PC would be compatible but it's not man enough

I've been looking at Dell, Many different PC makers, custom builds. the thing is if I went to build one (try) myself then I would end up speccing it to the max. I struggle to get as desktop under 1k when I go through the choices

For video editing and burning. Can anyone point me in the direction of a make, model of PC.

Know what ya mean mate when spec'ing a PC online!

I spec'd and bought my current Cyberpower PC whilst pissed up late one night, think the order was placed at 01:00 Hrs!

Cost me just under 3K 2 years ago, shoulda bought an iMac TBH as I don't game at all and my liquid cooled PC would make most spotty kids who game jiz their pants if they could get their hands on it! :D

That first one is the same i use…top bit of kit. Fab for video and photo editing, very, very quick. Doubles up as a telly for the kids too. No antivirus needed, and doesn't crash like windows. Comes with iMovie as standard which is fantastic, and easy to use. Doesn't have a blur-ray burner though, you need to get a standalone one, but includes a cd/dvd burner. I use 2x3tb external drives as extra, one for time machine for back up, the other for photos and videos, as RAW files take up space, as does 720/1080p videos. Once you go mac, you never go back IMO.

I was a fervent win doze user, but got sick of buggy OS, slowing down, viruses etc ( windows Vista was the final straw for me) …so bought a MAC 2yrs ago…easier and simpler, but you will need MAC versions of software, but you can use windows 7 0r 8 as well as MAC OS so you can use old windows stuff. FWIW, it will be worth buying a MAC with lower RAM, and upgrading it from Crucial as it's far cheaper……

    They look the bollocks too.

As far as gaming though, PC is better and has more titles (i don't game) but for editing movies and photos i find MAC far better and quicker. I've just bought a MAC Pro laptop for emily as she found a crack in her new windows lappy, she's made up with it. We are all Apple now as it works seamlessly together ( 2 iPads, 4 iPhones, 2 iPod touches, a macbook pro and an iMac), but if it's just a standalone comp you want and are used to windows, like gaming etc: get a pc. if you already have apple gear, want to edit movies and quickly edit photos and like an easier UI, get a Mac.

The ONLY caveat i find, is that the screen is not made for accurate editing, it's too glossy and colour and contrast are off… I have to calibrate it every mth for accuracy, but as it stands, photos and videos look fantastic on the screen, but it's not accurate.

but I am biased...and this is only the ones I could fit in the piccy (theres a G5 tower behind me that acts as our server)

Yup, the only people who dislike macs are ones who have never owned one.

Once you've tried mac you never go back. I've have my current IMAC for about 5 years, never have to reformat, not even got anti virus, only updated the OS twice and never switch off. I dont do gaming but do masses of video and photo editing and of course surfing.

If you have IPhones and IPad already its a no brainer.

For me Macs win hands down, just run and run not like bloody PC's slowing down over time. The software is normally more intuitive as well, although you seem to pay over the odds for the computer, but I personally believe you win over the long term. IMO

I dislike Macs because I used to repair them and Apple were arseholes to deal with. Also dealing with publishers who used pirated fonts that would corrupt and cause mac bombs clearly showed me just how unstable OS6/7/8 was, probably why Apple switched to Linux. Now-a-days the fanbois are enough to keep me away from them ;)

Apples integration with it's other products can catch out the unwary!

Couple of mates of mine have had blazin' rows with their other halves after 'friendly' (shall we say) text conversations with other Chicks have self updated to the family iPad sat at home on the coffee table!

That's not true, I have never owned one because I have never needed to own one, I build my own PC's and also game a lot, I doubt for the price there is a Mac that could out do my 5Ghz quad core windows 7 64bit machine for the things I do on it?
Although I will say that I don't know much about macs, for example, can you buy the bits and build it yourself to your own specs like I do with mine, or do you have to buy it whole?
Can you change motherboards, cpu's, ram, HDD, graphic cards, and power supply's

Re apple, I have 2 iPads and 2 and 4. iPhone 5. The kids have nano's
I like apple products but dislike their business plan. I crap after service which I have experienced. And why. Would be going though Costco.

No dealing with apple, 2 year warranty and cheaper than buying it from apple. So can't go wrong.

Why no anti virus software needed?

And I don't like the idea of the self updating part o to other iPads. Again I don't want my kids reading replays on he from you lot :)

Nobody writes viruses for them Matt. Well, hardly anyone. Despite how high their profile is the vast majority of the personal computer users of the world use windows or linux based systems. The last time I looked, it was something like a 98% ~ 2% split before the iPad took off. I remember Apple including it in 'worldwide portable computer sales' statistics, which really boosted their standing but led to a huge 'iPads don't count' debate.

The virus writing wankagensia just don't have as much to gain by attacking the Apple market as they do the windows one.

I agree with Simon. This is not true at all. I have an iPad and it goes everywhere with me, I wouldn't be without it but I dislike Apple, their ethos, the condescending nature of their marketing, the closed architecture of the equipment and the ludicrous cost premium.

See my signature for my thoughts on the matter.

In my business, virtually everybody uses Macs. If you ask them why, hardly anyone can tell you except the old fall back of "everybody uses Macs. They don't crash. I don't need security measures on it". They swoon like school girls over any leak of a new product being launched, join the evangelistic fervour of a new Apple Store opening and then joyously fork out the money for next years model when it arrives after Apple infer that they will be second class citizens if they stay with the old one, which, of course can't be upgraded.

that's one of the issues I have with the apple products. When my Desktop cooling system went tit's up. I just bought another and fitted it myself.

No one yet has posted a link to a good non Apple desktop that would be ideal for video editing. A heads up would help me when I come to change my PC in the future

    Any help :)

the reason is i'm seeing Ivybridge, sandybridge ffs whats that

    http://www.overclockers.co.uk/productlist.php?groupid=43&catid=2474

I know having SSD HD helps quicken up response times I think. but when they some with such small HD how does that make a PC fatster. What can you put onto it? when you have a 2-3TB HD

Macs need virus protection*. There are Mac specific virii out there and there is an increasing amount of Mac malware appearing. Percentage wise there will always be a lot more bad stuff written for the PC world as it has a significantly larger market penetration. I know Mac users who have never had a virus, but these are people who are very security aware, and normally end up running virtual machines to do anything outside of their protected bubble. 2 years ago there were next to no Android malware/virus programs because it simply wasn't worth the effort, now with Android dominating the phone (and tablet?) market the professionals are giving it a great deal of attention.

*Disclaimer. I work for an Anti-Virus company, not sales, so some might say I am bound to say that. However I have probably worked in IT for longer than some people on here have been on this planet and have have no vested interest beyond trying to save people the hassle of recovering from an infection.

If you want a video editing PC then it doesn't necessarily follow that you want a gaming PC. A (couple of?) high end CPU with fast GPU graphics card, with lots and lots of memory, and striped SSDs would suffice. You can now get normal SSDs up to 1TB and use that for your OS/Programs, but if you really want fast disk performance then PCI SSD such an OCZ Revo or Z-Drive would be the way forwards, and they go up to 3.2TB if you are really serious. Not sure of graphics cards so would need to do some research on that. Put a some decent Gigabit Network cards in and use a NAS for your main storage, and having a proper wired connection is always the best option if feasible.
