In the near future I will be having my spine fused at L3, L4 & L5, has anyone had this procedure done and if so how does it effect your ability to ride a sports bike?

    Any info would help guys?

Dont ask ... I have scoliosis which is a curved spine formed from 1 half of my body growing faster than the other . Its a proper S shape . this is my latest Xray

I whore a brace all throu schol to keep it under control which prevented me from having surgery but these days im in alot of pain , I live of Morphine and am awaiting a full Spinal correction with a few shuttle grade alloy rods in to help support it .

Members may have noticed alot of my posts are from 5.00 am every day as i have trouble sleeping from back ache

The only proper relief i get is when im crouched over my bike .. Thats my excuse for having a brand new Blade lol

Hope it all goes well for you mate .. Scoliosis is hereditary and my cousin has had some fusions done .. stiff at first but good after while

I have a L5 S1 forward prolapses, with the scar tissue resting against the exit of the S1 nerve route through my pelvis, a problem which forced me out of the forces.

I also have a permenant limp and sciatic pain down both legs, however like dan the bike is my relief leaning forwards is great for me and I couldnt live without the bike.

I have had several freinds go through what you are and the honest answer is I don't know if you will or won't be able to ride a sports bike again after. One had great results after, another is worse than before the surgery, both needed the op desperately and its not an easy process with a good bit of recovery to follow.

I decided against surgery unless it gets worse and my surgeon was very helpful in my decision, You obviously need the op so good luck and I hope it all works out for you :)

Having sean your xray I,ll think myself fortunate, My 18 year old son has Scoliosis, I will send you a pic when Im on my own computer. My wife and I need to speak to people like yourself to learn a little more about the opp and the movement you have after. The Doctors are waiting for my son to stop growing then he will need sugery, we go to see the consultant every six months. If I may I would like to follow your progress to get an indipendent veiw of the procedure, benifits and problems, though a bike forum may not be the best place to do that??

I have no discs at all between three vertebra so its bone against bons in places and my nerves get trapped from time to time. However having seen Dans problem I feel my situation is nothing! I have had to give up Golf, I can't walk far and can't lift or take impact, however, I can ride a bike! Perhaps mine is not so bad, good luck Dan!

Carl, you are exactly right when you mention that dialogue between mutual sufferers of a chronic condition is the best course of action. Your specialists and surgeons will be able to advise you on any lifestyle changes base on the statistics of successful treatment but in order for you to fully judge the impact on how you work, rest and play for the rest of your life, it's imperative that you observe how easily, or otherwise, that others have made that transition.

This is a good thread as I have no doubt there is a surplus of old injuries on here that members have had to learn to adapt to.

I myself had a nasty splinter yesterday.

Yeah no problem mate .. Im 28 now and was diagnosed at 11 and wore the brace till i was 16 . When i stopped growing they offered me the op but back then it in involved being bed ridden for 6 months and me being very stiff after for the rest of my life so i turned them down . I was fine up till i was 24 and then i started to get back pain after doing heavy activities . This gradually got worse over 2 years and the last 2 years after that iv been in alot of pain and now have no choice but to have the op.

Now technology has changed and medical sience has come on leaps and bounds so the surgery now is so much more advanced that patients are walking a few days after and 90% make a full recovery ..

I wish Todays op was available back when i needed it as the docters now are not so willing to operate because of my age but if i had had it when i was 16 my younger years would have been greatly affected so i have no regrets but would advise you to get your son the op whilst he is young enough to recover with out problems

If you want to ask any questions mate ill PM you my Email address
