' Cheers SW, GOT to get a me white one. BTW, surprised you haven't commented on my 'Grab-Handles' mod' in the 'Pillion Footrest Removal' thread. or have you been dozing-off too?
It's been swapped for a Black one sorry Nicko as the original had a small crack in a weld I noticed after returning from my Ireland trip. Maybe this was a protest at being forced to do 174 with 50 lires or Kreiga strapped to it!
The Renntecs have a low weight limit. I have a couple of mates who had them and they snapped (having said that they did fit top boxes to them!) Ventura Luggage - its the future
Aw BUMMER! I was looking forward to coming up and collecting it. We could have used the opportunity to take the piss out of each-other face-to-face.
Nah, not avin that shyte Ian! First and foremost the Renntec unit is a Grab Rail for use by a fully grown adult. It has to be designed and engineered for all reasonably foreseeable loads it could be subjected to. Reasonably quick acceleration and emergency braking by the rider would transmit very high leverage loads through the rail if being held by ya average adult, far more indeed than strapping a few soft bags of clothing etc to it. Ventura rack is the same as the Renntec in terms of construction, metal tube sizing and mounting points bar the Renntec has extra mounting points using the underseat grab strap anchor points. Plus the Renntec looks sweet whilst the Ventura looks Pony!
I think the Pillion rail is fine, its the main rack that is a weak point - seem to remember there is a sticker with a weight limit on the Renntecs. To be fair I never had a problem with mine (on CBR600s, VTR1000s, CBR1000RR6) Ventura is still better
Ventura 1 ========= Dold International, the manufacturer of the Ventura Bike-Pack System, lists the recommended maximum weight capacity of 20 lbs for most of the Ventura Racks. Renntec 0 ========= We recommend approx 5kg for this Carrier. The weight limit is not a reflection on the strength of the carrier but a guideline to help protect against any breakage of the plastics or chassis that could result from overloading.
Mine actually cracked at the front mounting point which is all grab rail, TBH it didn't snap off just had a small crack in it which was only highlighted by a line of rust forming due to all the rain we had on our Ireland Tour. Demon Tweeks said they've never known any Renntec product fail like this so they and I am putting it down to a bad weld on a Friday afternoon.
Sounds like this person has given a Renntec a good test! "i put the bike on a paddock stand, and stood on the rack (on the bike), and no bending or snapping occurred, so mines good for 70kg." Luggage Rack weight limitations??? - Triumph Forum: Triumph Rat Motorcycle Forums
Just treated meself to the Kriega US70 combo. (1 x 30 and 2 x 20 packs) Looking forward to trying them out
Has anyone here just strapped Kriega to the bike and its been ok i.e on the back seat ?? Ive got a 30 and two tens, and Im off to Europe again with the guys here in a couple of months and just wanted to check this out. Im also considering getting a Kriega rucksack for the trip but dont really like the idea of that........................................... Thoughts.......????
Following with interest as i have a US30 on the seat, but havn't been anywhere with it yet. Hopefully some of the guys who took Kriega's on the Scotland trip will Confirm as some used a rack but some used the seat.
Yes mate, that's exactly what started this thread off as I bought a US50 Combo. It does fit OK to the bike using the under seat strapping method and it will stay there, however I and others have found the following downsides. 1) Strapping up reasonably tightly causes the pillion seat to actually bend/distort up with the pull of the straps 2) No matter how tight you strap it there is considerable side to side movement and some forward creeping when riding, which for me is disconcerting when pushing on in the twisties etc 3) You have to take precautions using gaffer tape etc on your body work as the straps will rub the paint away. 4) having the 10's either side of the 30 makes the setup wider than necessary. The Renntec rack is around £75 and lets you mount the Kreiga straps directly to it's frame which has the following benefits.. 1) Everything is rock solid whilst riding and cuts out virtually all movement. 2) The paintwork is protected far more using this method. 3) It lets you mount more luggage as you have the rear rack as well to add another US Bag behind the main setup 4) This set up allows max cornering and top end blats, should you desire, and everything is as safe as houses whilst doing so! I wish I had bought a US 20 in place of one of the US 10's as the Renntec rack would easily let you mount a 20 on top of the 30 which would both sit on the seat and get strapped to the side rails then a US10 or even another 20 can then get strapped vertically behind the above with one end sat on the rear rack just as I have done in the pictures below.
The pulling of the seat - Could it make a difference with how the under seat straps are fitted as mine are pretty damn solid, although i've not loaded the bag up properly to test yet. Also, to save the paintwork i got a large sheet of that rubber padding stuff and sliced 4 holes to feed the straps through. Hopefully that will work.
Not really Muff, it doesn't matter how you attach the straps (not that you've got much choice anyway) it's the fact that the straps attach to the under-seat sub-frames which are located further in towards the centre of the bike so the straps have to be threaded outwards to exit the underside of the Pillion seat before they can 'Pull' upwards. Because of this it then tries to bend the edges of the pillion seat over as it's not a straight vertical pull from the anchor points. Bottom line is it works OK without any bracketry so it's up to the individual. Me, I like to use my bike to it's full capabilities where practical so the safer my luggage is the better, at the end of the day loose luggage or the extra width in standard Combo form could be the difference in an off or not so for £75 and 30 mins fitting it's a no brainer for me. Comes back off in 10 mins and back on in 10 mins once the initial mounting bolts have been fitted as these stay on permanently and are unseen on the underside of the plastics.
My renntec rack and kriega bags arrived today. The rack was actually in white as I got it from Demon Tweeks ebay outlet for only £41 with free postage as opposed to £90 for a black one !. However quick rub down and a spray with some primer then gloss black and shes nearly there. Few coats of lacquer tomorrow and its sorted
And there we have it 3 coats of lacquer today and shes sorted. Guess there is a few bits could`ve been a bit better but its only going to get scuffed anyway and the fact I saved £50 makes me well chuffed !
