I've read a lot about oil consumption on these 08-12 blades. However, I have also read that the problem was fixed with a later piston ring development (one added?) .. Obviously I will be taking a close look at the oil. No doubt my dealers used Semi Synth, as would I in just about every other bike I've owned. However there seems to be a legitimate argument for fully synth in engines with what amounts to near full race performance. Is there really anything to worry about, is it less common in 10 and up models? Does Fully synth really make a diff? And which grades / makes are people using to best effect? Sorry, I know this has probably been done to death, but a search wasn't as forthcoming as I thought it would be Jake
Lots of info in this months ride magazine. Lots of threads on here about it - sure somebody will locate main one and add link. My engine rebuilt under warranty to solve - new rings fitted being main thing. I use cheap as chips heine gerick oil think semi synth and oil use has stopped.
It was the 08 model in particular that suffered the oil consumption problems and had a few recalls. Either way blades tend to drink more oil that other bikes like the Yamaha R1 which my brother never has to top up
My 12 model is on 2400 miles now and hasn't had a drop added before or since it's 600 mile initial service and is still bang on the Max fill mark.
Fingers crossed for my 10 plate one then I'll keep an eye on it, first off... I'm gonna get some fully synth. I feel it needs it
ive got the 2011 model and i did have a little clench moment after the initial run in when the level dropped. But since I topped that up Ive never needed to do anything (obviously changed the oil recently too)
Same with my '08 model that's now done 30,000 miles. Even took a couple of these as they fold flat and are useful for pouring oil in: Transair Oil Funnel Single after I left most of a 1l bottle on the floor of a petrol station in Siena one year , but never needed them.
