Hey guys has anyone replaced there rear shock before? If so is it straight forward or are there pit falls to watch out for? My shock preload collar is totally fcuked basically chewed up The key (c spanner) just slides off and won't grip I set the ramp to No7 to go to Knockhill with my Mrs on Sunday and it wouldn't adjust back down so I thot if it's sticking and I go the other way it might loosen off but NO!!!.. now it's stuck on No fcukin 8!!!.. It's riding like a 180mph space hopper! I got the torch out had a look at the collar and it looks plain nasty and I now know what Ken Dodds dentist feels like!!! Also I just took delivery of a new rear sportsmart hoop and dont want to fcuk that too! So thot I'd better get on ebay! I managed to get a brand new used shock of a 2010 bike that was race prept so it has done 0 miles! Oh my normal setting is No5 So there you have it! Hence the title of this thread! Any help will be greatly appreciated Cheers Trev
The Firebloke has recently had a new shock fitted and also Jason has bought one but I am not sure if he has fitted it yet .See if you can catch either of them .Have you been riding on cobbles or rock climbing?
Hi Giv mate, I have adjusted it a few times mate normally when the Mrs is going pillion or I may adjust it depending in how big my dump was that morning I'm Jocking dude I'm just shocked at how soft the metal is Mike! I thot the collar would have been made from hardened steel but obviously it's not! The key is made from tougher stuff to churn up the teeth the way it has! Honda has a lot to answer for! Cutting costs are starting show where you least expect it! It's bloody annoying because they're amazing bikes otherwise
Trev - it's a simple job if you have an Abba stand which lifts the bike from the swinging arm pivot. Once you have the rear wheel off the floor all the weight comes off the shock. You will need to remove the pivot bolts from the suspension links (have a look at how its put together) which will release the lower end of the shock. You will need to just support the rear wheel to take the weight of the links. Once the lower end is free you can undo the bolt at the top of the shock. Then lower the shock down through the swing arm. Give all the bearings (needle rollers) a clean and re-grease the reverse procedure to fit new shock. There is a full write up with diagrams in the online manual on this forum. Good luck - Steve
Hi HRCTrev09, To change the rear shock is straight forward if you have a Abba stand or rear-sets fitted, no prob's if you don't, it's just easier to lift the rear wheel off the floor so the shock is unloaded. I supported my bike by placing the rear-sets up on axle stands so the rear wheel was of the ground. I removed the monster of a stock exhaust. Removed the lower shock linkage. (whilst this is out, re-grease as they are not well greased from the factory) Removed the top shock mounting bolt. The shock is removed from underneath, it takes a bit of fiddling but take your time. Fitting is the reversal of the above. Here is a link to the 2008 service manual just in case you don't already have it; http://cbr.deathace.net/files/08cbr1000rr_sm.pdf The suspension section you want is in section 15 page 14 onwards.
RedMacGregor had posted whilst I was typing and finding the link for the service manual At least we are saying the same way to do it!!!!!
Hi Trev I have just replaced mine with a 2012 rear shock you will need a new rear hugger as they are bigger than a 08-11 shock as well ,and as its been pointed out you need to get your bike of the ground ,once you remove exhaust its pretty straight forward You would of been better putting a 2012 shock on they are more expensive but a far better shock IMO, you can get them of eBay for approx £150.
Interesting that you should advise re-greasing on assembly mate. I drew a lot of 'flak' wen I sugested in my post ( see Thread: Grease nipples on suspension?) that the linkages mite run dry.
Hi shipmate, don't worry it's probably better just strip it down anyway just to ensure you get grease in all the right places
Thanks for that Jason I managed to get a crackin shock of eBay it is the conventional one but it hasn't been used so it's like new also I could bare to part with my hugger! O Oh and I'm skint dude
Hi Si 2 seats of ladders and a rope or similar just to hold the weight off the back wheel/swing arm .
If I had to choose between dry or greased linkage bearings, I'd go for greased all the time. It only takes a little time and effort to remove the linkage and grease the bearings, I wouldn't bother with fitting grease nipples. It's not as if the area is blasted with high pressure water all of the time causing the grease to run out.
I kept my 09 carbon hugger, it just needed a little bit of material removing for it to fit perfectly when I fitted the 2012 shock.
Ooooooooooh!!!!... NO!! NO!! I have to behave! I would have to sell my bike to pay for the Divorce Pheewwww that was a close one Barry!!!! Lead me not into temptation dude
