What the feck is a cat going to do with a load of nine mill? YORKSHIRE EVENING POST 29th June 2013 A couple were left shell-shocked – after stumbling across a cache of 7,500 bullets in the back garden of their Leeds home. Rifle rounds, machine gun rounds, shotgun cartridges and dozens of 9mm and 8mm rounds were found dumped in ponds at the home of Neil Tipping, 33, and girlfriend Eleanor Mercer, 32, on Roman Terrace, Roundhay. The concerned couple now want to leave the house they had planned to settle down in. Lettings manager Mr Tipping said: “It’s really unnerved us. I’m terrified that next time I’m mowing the lawn I’ll run over a bullet that hasn’t been found yet. “One of us could be seriously hurt. “We have friends with young children who could have put one of the bullets in their mouth, or one of our cats could have got hold of one – it doesn’t bear thinking about.” The couple moved into the rented house last September, but it wasn’t until this month when Mr Tipping found a single bullet while gardening. “Something fell from the pile of weeds I’d pulled out and it hit the paving stones with a clink,” he said. “I didn’t think much about it until it happened again with the next pile – and I saw a flash of gold. “My first thought was ‘Oh my God, I’ve found treasure!’ I was thrilled. “But I picked the metal up and realised it was a bullet.” A call to the emergency services sparked a major response from police and the fire service. An intensive two-day search followed, during which most of the bullets were found in two ponds. “It’s just mind blowing,” Mr Tipping said. “The police told me that they found more rounds of ammunition in our back garden than at the local arms store.”
My mate Dave is the only person Bert has ever showed any concerted affection for. He dislikes cats intensely, which gives you an idea of how Bert's mind works. Dave once said he was only thankful that Bert couldn't hold a flick knife because of the way he looked at him. The picture above I took from the other end of the garden with a very long lens. The look tells you why. For the record, Bert doesn't care for 9's. he prefers .357 magnum wadcutters. He says it give him the punch of a full 44 but with more control. I just take his word for it.
