Just been offere a MK2 Golf 3dr GTI. the body work is amazing, however the engine is solid.... as in seized. stored with a leaking head and i think the oil was dropped. the body works really sound no rust as it was wax oil everywhere. been offer it really cheap. i have 2 option risk getting a MK2 engine and selling on or puttting something more moden in.... now what engine should i squeeze in. i was think mk4 R32 suguestion welcome or shud i not bother????
I suppose if you are handy and have garage room it would be a nice little project .Cant say about the engine as its not my thing but good luck if you go for it .
Used to be into the VW scene in a big way, still have a 300BHP Mk4 stored in a garage. Depends what you want to do, if your not worried about keeping it original I'd go with a 20v turbo lump all day long, get a complete unit from a 225 car, mapped it to 260 odd without any real issues. The engines are good for 300BHP without any internals needing modding, that way more power than you can get from an R32 lump without adding force induction to it which I'd imagine would be serious bucks. Back in the day before the turbo's come out the VR6 transplant into the MK2's was all the rage, thing was these engines are heavy and many thought the cars handling was messed up.
Or stick in the 4 cylinder 2.0 EA113 CDL lump, mines running 320BHP with just a stage 1 chip reflash and standard cats, downpipes etc......just a mite juicy though
Yer agree there the VR6 is a very heavy lump and loads of extra work to get them handing owt right. not even sure if the R32 block would fit, i have worked on one and it was really easy to work on and nice to drive. i not so bother with orignal as replament engine will be shot or real high miles, never thought about the 20v....... might be a cheap option
Mark 1 and 2 nice. After that they got a bit fat. Yes this is a bike forum but many if not most like me love bikes and cars.
Depends what cheap is mate, but the 20v was the engine of choice at one point. If its a 16v in there, i'd personally stick with it, 20l bottom end, throttle boddies to keep the 16v lump. Gutted I sold my Mk2 16v, should have kept it.
Good shout, never seen this done but then haven't paid any attention to what's been used in the last four or so years.
I would totally agree with dropping in the 1.8t 20v lump from the S3 into the golf! I had the S3 and then rebuilt the engine and put into another S3 when it was damaged beyond repair by thieves. The 1.8t is so modifiable with so many parts available cheap for it! The R32 lump is pointless unless you are also doing the turbo conversion to it as a remapped 1.8t will spank it all day long weighing in at half the 3.2 lump. I had 330bhp with forged pistons etc but standard turbo and 327lb ft of torque. No lag and ate scoobies and evo's all day long TBH just buying a 225bhp S3 would be far cheaper and it is a much better chassis with quattro etc than the old golf. I put the R32 susp linkages on tho as they are firmer due to the extra weight of that 3.2l engine
Good point, nor have I, but its just a decent lump that probably would go into a MK2, its already uprated internally, pistons/rods etc and with the bigger KO4 blower, I should have made that clear!!!! Mines in a TT not a MK2.
hmmmmm, it not about getting just a quick car i loved the Mk2 but never owned one. just rung a few mates in know recons i can get engine and box for 500- 600 as a r32 is 3 to 4 times that. however a iv never seen S3 that would keep to a EVO even at the mod car shows. but you never know. i had the S6 before and that couldn't do it.... my days is nice car have gone as the kids come first hence a mondeo in the drive, but this could be a really cheap project for me.
