Thanks scooby, I've just messages my mech to ask him to charge up my battery tomorrow and test the reg/rec and look for a dodgy connection. Seems very strange that I managed to charge up the battery from the mains and it lasted for a while but only lasted for about ten minutes with the new stator installed. I guess if he fits a new battery tomorrow and it still stalls then it leads to another issue, process of elimination I guess. Keep that reg/rec for me just incase.
Your all probably bored of reading this thread but I'm updating it so hopefully it'll help others in the future. Mechs just rang and told me that he charged the battery up overnight, bike started up fine and battery was showing around 13v with bike idling, after about 3 mins the revs dropped and the dash disappeared and then it cut out. He said it sounds like the reg/rec is fubard too. It's bizarre that the stator burned out and the reg/rec broke at the same time, looks like its got an internal fault when it heats up. There's no sign of burning or chaffed wires.
if it makes you feel any better mine didnt last that long before the reg died too, although mine would run a bit longer than that, clocks would flash on and off and proper pop and bang out the exhaust when any part of the charging system was failing.
I'm getting popping out of my exhaust up to 4,000 revs but the bike starts ok; most of the time. I am hoping the stator hasn't gone again. Had the stator and rotor replaced for the later model some years ago. I am also hoping it's not the reg/rec but I have seen two on EBay if it is. Good luck everyone.
The stator flywheel issue only seems to affect the 04-07 RR's however I think it's mostly the 04/05 that have the most issues. I'm hoping my new reg/rec turns up today so I can finally get back on the road.
I know this will not be much help, but my old RR6 up until it was nicked was still on the original battery (Optimate plugged in when parked most nights), had no electrical or mechanical failures, the only issues were a crudded rad externally and knackered front discs in 60K miles. Never had a valve check, had not been in a dealer since 4K, that's when I bought it, just semi syn oil & filter every 4k religiously , air filters at 12k intervals, and changed the plugs at 40K.
LOL sorry mate. If the stator/flywheel hasn't been replaced to the upgraded parts then I will guarantee you it will burn up sooner or later. You may be lucky and not have any problems but I would happily put money on it doing so. It's burned up three times now on my 04, once just before I got the bike at 7900 miles, I had the stator re-wound at 13,000 and it's just gone again at 18,000 miles. I've just replaced the stator and flywheel for the upgraded OEM stator/flywheel so it should be fine from now on. Otherwise bike hasn't missed a beat in 10,000miles
Just had a call from my Mech and he's fitted the new reg/rec and it's all working again as it should, yay! Now do i part ex it for the 09 R1 I looked at yesterday?
i dont think i would be worried, lots fail but a hell of a lot dont! you only hear about them failing because of forums. mine pops at about 3k with the map im running and occasionally at high revs when blasting down country twisties. some poping is normal. when it pops due to lack of electrical power it does it alot and its loud if you bike starts again after that its not due to lack of electricity.
Well I ended up having my stator rewound at WCW after having a new battery fitted as even though it was good for a short while it wasn't long before my dash went bandy and the bike cut out, fortunately as I went to put it away. I charged it on the Optimate over night and took it to my local garage and it rode good until I switched it off, then it didn't start, fortunately again I was right outside the workshop. Charging system checked quickly by mechanic and worst fears realised. Stator and Reg/rec fucked. Sent both back to WCW. Stator rewound as I said and Reg/rec tested by them. Rewound stator fitted and new Reg/Rec (Important bit to note. MOSFET type) and all good until I had work done just recently from Honda main dealer on front engine mounts. Clocks needing adjusting so they had seemingly taken the battery connection off but then the exhaust popping again so now I'm worried again and I'm trying to think of what they would do around electrics to redo my threads. Bike tested by them and reading given as 14.2v at 5000 revs. Shouldn't this be 15.5v?
Also you might have a bad earth or intermittent short. I had an auto oiler that occasionally went screwy and sent the dash to go crazy then stall. Maybe when you had work done the mechanics may have pinched a wire causing a short?
If it says a max of 15.5, it probably just means your battery was quite well charged and did not need any more volts - that's what regulators do. But do watch out for earth/short, if its not running right.
