Jason, You can turn data off on the iPhone in settings/general/mobile data=off
This does also mean pic messages won't come thru but you won't get hit with expensive data roaming charges!:)

I was thinking of using the MCN app while we are on the move, just so hopefully I can keep track of places we have been and any roads that we have travelled, I tried to use it in aeroplane mode but it needs to be on for the GPS, I'm right in thinking that this app doesn't actually use any data? But as you say Craig, turn off the data roaming and it wont use anything. having the charger on the bike will help because the app eats the battery.

Gary I have not used the mcn app but just by what you are writing I am guessing its a map overlay with gps coordinates and it keeps updating location on map as you move? I would check how the app stores the gps overlay data to check if its on the phone or does it upload stuff to a server on the net somewhere for retrieval later?

I have successfully used tomtom on my iPhone with the data turned off without problems.
The only thing I have found that doesn't work with data off for normal phone tasks was the pic messaging, still recieved calls n normal texts but pics were only recieved when data was turned back on. Any app that requires data such as safari asks you to turn data back on before it loads or if u tie into a wifi connection the apps will use that instead!

I'm sure it stores the data on the phone mate, and only calls up a map when you bring up a given ride? ha, if in doubt i'll leave it off.

Ok, Mr Shinysideup, here's my findings.

Phone data roaming switched to the off position
Phone cellular Data switched to the off position

This restricts all data transfer to WIFI.

The MCN app recorded my trip down the sea front no problems with the above settings.

Strange though, when I launched the 'ride' in the engineering tram ;) it does still show the map without downloading anything.

Anyway, confident now I can run this app for the duration of our riding without any surprising bills when we get back.
But I'm sure my OCD won't let me get away THAT easily. Will it?

The map itself might be part of the app? Not too sure.

I always have data roaming turned off on my phone(never even had it out of the uk) and toggle the mobile data on and off depending if I want apps to access the Internet or not (this can also be done on per app setting). If mobile data is toggled off then it does not get issued an Internet protocol(IP) address from the cellular provider so apps can't comunicate with Internet without being hooked into a wifi spot!

Least now you know what's the score with it tho!

    Good evening........hello!
Sorry, just had to get that out of my system, I've done the last three posts and peeps must thinking I'm talking to myself ;)

Anyway followers, apart from its not long now, as I'm sure your all pi€€ed off with my ramblings and you'll all be pleased to see the back of this thread? However it just goes to show, flexibility makes this trip available for any one how ever long or short they choose.

I recieved news this evening that Our numbers have almost certainly swelled to four.
Now this chap is certainly no European slouch, if I'm totally honest, I've hoped from the off that he would join us and share his wealth of knowlage, and it seems if you wish hard enough, they come true.
I'm sure he'll pop along and do his introduction when he's gone from 99.9% to 100% certain.

So, for anyone still thinking of a September jaunt around the Pyrenees? It's never to late.

    24 sleeps :D
