Has anyone put a full Hel brake line set on an ABS bike? If so does the set replace every flexi line in the system?
Speak to Arthurbikemad mate. He knows all about the problems with this system and fitting braided lines to it.
Just bought a set of these RG braided hoses for the front £60 + postage R G Front Brake Line Kit for Honda CBR1000RR ABS 2008 to 2011 | eBay. As far as I can tell it replaces all the hoses on the front up to the unions near the radiator. So forget the ebay description. No fancy colours ( but I prefer not to venture too far from stock). RG now sell em for £99.99 + vat + postage so I expect them to rise in price very shortly Picture here if anyone is interested
Bought a bespoke HEL kit off Arthur a week or two ago as I needed a longer line from the lever due to my Riser Bars. Not fitted yet as Arthurs busy at the mo and TBH I don't trust my local Honda Dealer to do a proper job.
+1 on above,had them on my 600RR and would love them on my blade,just not sure about ABS fittings. If the kits didn't replace every flexi hose would it put more pressure on these original hoses and cause problems?
PM Arthurbikemad Ross. My ABS kit comes with all the fittings and marshaling blocks but just needs a slight alteration or two with the existing Honda brackets, something a Main Dealer might Poo Poo. I'd fit em me self but am not confident enough to do a full ABS Bleed, despite having the OEM Workshop manual at my disposal! I'm happy to wait till Arthur is less busy and waz the Bike down to him on the Trailer for fitting etc
They shouldn't put any more pressure on any remaining flexi hoses but u won't get the full benefit of the stainless lines as the original flexi's will still be able to expand when applying the brakes!
That's what worrys me,the original hoses still expanding. If you have same pressure in the system but 1/2 to 3/4 is now braided hoses it will mean more expansion on rubber hose parts,rather than a smaller but equal expansion along all the hoses.
Aren't the hoses up to the unions near the radiator the only flexi hoses (for the fronts anyway)? Just need the time and courage to fit mine!
If the pressure in the lines are the same then the amount of movement from each line would still be the same no? The fact that some of the lines are now stainless would mean they won't expand but the OEM I think would still expand the same amount as if it has all the OEM hoses on, I would have thought for the remaining OEM hose to expand further the pressure would have to be higher than it was previously. But I do have another thought tho, given that the feel at the lever is actually provided by a dummy piston inside the abs power unit would fitting stainless lines really have the same benefit as a non abs bike? People fit stainless lines to non abs bikes to limit the amount of travel the lever gets from the expansion of the OEM rubber lines but as the feel at the lever is provided by this dummy piston and not the lines themselves would the rider be able to feel the difference?
IMO Yes! The ABS unit gauges it's feedback from the pressure upstream via the rubber lines to the calipers. If these rubber lines expand then this has a negative 'feedback' to the ABS unit which react's accordingly with a further negative feedback to the master cylinder & Lever! 'Engineering' out expansion in the lines can only be good which ever way U look at it.
No it doesn't the abs intercepts the pressure applied to the lever inside the power unit, fluid travels from the master cylinder to the power unit which contains a dummy piston(can't remember Honda name for it) which travels out similar to a normal piston in a caliper giving normal travel feel at lever. In the same circuit with the dummy piston there is a pressure sensor which sends a signal to the abs ECU which this signal changes depending on the pressure applied to lever. This signal is used by the ECU along with the wheel speed sensors and it powers up another motorised piston which that then pushes the fluid out down to the calipers. As there is basically two seperate brake circuits the ECU can alter the flow using the motorised piston without affecting the pressure/feel at the lever. Cars don't use this middle man dummy piston and that's why the brake pedal under your foot vibrates and purses as the motor pushes the pressure back up the system!
Think I'll wait until the original hoses look worn a bit and the hoses are tried and tested more on abs blade. Does anyone think that by fitting braided hoses could affect any claims under warranty for abs problems?
