Wow, great thread people... My 10 plate is due a change also, i'm finding gear changes clunky... and a clicking feel on the clutch lever especially when its hot. So from all that the Motul 5100 is pretty dam good, its a semi and ideal for the uk @ 10W30, and a few good responses to Silkolene...Comp4. I have never had any issues from Castrol on previous bikes, but hey, owners are the best source for what is really going on. Awesome, keep it up. I'm getting the oil+filter changed for peace of mind.
hey nico - id share this with you, i got from honda - i live in south east queensland which means my daily summer temps get as high as 45C - i was worried about needing the 10W40 but honda reminded me, thats why the blade has a filthy big watercooled radiator on it so as to keep those engine temps down and why honda has no problems in recommending 10W30 for their blades worldwide.
The bottom line is that for 90% of most people's riding Semi synth meets the requirements. Or at least, this was always the mantra. When a litre bike was 120-140 Bhp. Now we are pushing 190. These are RACE engines incomparison to those assumptions. Mine has semi in it thanks to the dealer. I've lost 250ml in 2 thousand miles. And my gearbox is notchy as hell. Time for fully synth people.
right then guys, this might help. I have just spoken to BSD in Peterborough. Some of you may know who they are but for those who don't, these people, or should I say, this guy is awesome when it comes to bikes. What he doesn't know isn't worth knowing, I've had a lot of work done on all my bikes by him and my boss has had several race engines built by him and his work is extremely meticulous so would trust anything he says. Been told by them to use a 10W40 Semi Synthetic as long as it's a decent brand. Down there they us Silkolene Comp 4 so this is what I'll be putting in today when I do my oil change later on.
Yes thats what I use and its very good IMO, and I have tried a lot of different ones in various bikes. I actually cant pick any difference between the Silkolene comp 4 and Motul 5100 FWIW
I'm just at BSD now having AP66 racing brake fluid and pads fitted having just had a dyno session here too recently and they are indeed awesome even tho Mark told me to sell the blade and get a sucky sorry Suzuki
I always used it in the duke but no local stealer stock it here so its cheaper for me to use castrol.
Well I did my oil and filter yesterday using Silkolene Comp 4 10W40 Semi Synthetic and am very happy with the results. Instantly noticed the difference, gear changes so much smoother and engine certainly sounds happier. Did a track day at Cadwell today and didn't burn a drop of oil either so well chuffed. I would definitely recommend it. Cost me £36 for 4 litres but worth every penny.
Reading this with interest as I'm going to be doing a full oil and filter change when I fit the slipper clutch. I currently use this in my other bike So I am thinking of using it in the Blade, although it a 10w40 as opposed to the 10w30 Honda specify, though I note that some here do use the 40 in their bikes
the 10W40 will be fine mate, like I said, my engine sounds mint now and seems to pick up better. One thing to bear in mind though is a lot of people don't recommend using fully synthetic oil, that's why I went with the silkolene.
My bike is due its 600 miles oil change soon and reading with interest this 'Semi Synth' vs 'Fully Synth' debate. It appears from doing some searching through Google and forums that 'Fully Synth' is now Honda's recommended type particularly Castrol Power 1 Racing 10w-30. A couple of people have mentioned that their gearchange has become notchy since using this oil yet others seem perfectly happy with it. The Silkolene 'sounds' as though it is preferred by some and it did seem good when I ran it in my RSV4. Looking around there seems to be a few types of Silkolene being bought, Pro4 Race, Pro4 Energy and Comp 4. Are these all Fully Synthetic and is one better than the other ??
hey ian, hows it going - the honda owners manual says to run GN4 10w30 which is, as you know, a full 10w30 mineral oil blended especially for honda ..... in australia, honda motorcycles have been given direction from honda japan that they hold to their manuals recommendation of honda GN4 but say owners can intermix with honda HP4 10w30 semi synthetic as they prefer and that both oils will interchange with no rejection of each other - fully synthetic oil is not recommended in any honda CBR1000rr manual - ive had motul fully synthetic 300v 10w40 in my blade and quickly switched to honda HP4 10w30 with no regrets, and got improvements - that being said, i dont track my bike, i TT on mountain roads.
