Currently have a well sorted 900RR with freshly rebuild engine which is fully blue printed and balanced but its just not got the go that the newer bikes have. Im after something rather mental but keeping the older larger looks of the original blade as im quite a big chap.

Well some say im a mad man for doing this but with winter approaching I need another bike project to keep me busy on those long winter nights :) So decided why not fit an RR4 engine to my 98 and then enjoy 150 BHP with no reliability issues! Ive found a good engine complete with throttle bodies and airbox as want to retain the fuel injection system and now need to source full loom and ECU etc etc.

My question is anyone know if you can fit the RR8 airbox to the early engine and then use the RR8 loom and ECU? Are the throttle bodies the same size or the inlet on the engine the same? Going to have lots of questions for the later blade experts as the modern electrics is new to me :)

Anyway will get some pics up and document my work should any other mad fool want to try this :)

Pic of the bike at the moment

airbox is totally different as the ram system comes from a different place.and are you sure the 08 lecrics will work on an 04 motor,i doubt it.

now this is just me,but unless your totally clued up on what will+wont transplant over, your in for a world of headaches and tech issues down the line, and making it virtually impossible to sell on at a later date.

dont get me wrong,i do like tinkering,i have an FZR400r running a t/cat 600 motor, with a zxr400 front end,r6 rear, one off ram system, flat slide carbs etc,but unless you know for sure that things will work you'll end up banging your head against a brick wall for a long time.

does the rr4 motor slot in or do you need to modify the frame?

Thanks for the reply Scooby, yeah this was why I thought I would ask.. If its completely different I will just transplant all RR4 stuff over keeping it more simple.. ECU, loom, clocks etc etc everything. Frame needs some heavy mods but have a friend whos willing to tackle it and is a alloy fabricator and has done a lot of other project on this bike before. I would probably get a wrecked crank case and head and give him that with my frame and let him get on with it! Im not expecting the tank to clear the airbox either so some cutting and shutting will be needed underneath also..

As regards resale, she will never be sold so thats not a worry :)

Just reread what youve written Scooby, the airbox design doesnt worry me too much where the ram air enters etc, what I was thinking is would the R8 throttle bodies bolt to the the rubbers of the 04 inlet, inlet spaces etc the same... With a custom map I cant see why the RR4 electronics couldnt work on the R8 airbox... maybe worth me speaking to some tuners to be sure! The reason im keen to do this is the RR8 airbox is smaller and may even fit under the tank without having to hack the tank..

    ok.

not sure on the inlet diameters, but that would be one of the easy things to fettle in the grand scheme of it.theres not a lot in the size of the air boxes, apart from the fact the ram comes underneath on the 04,and at the sides on the 08.

worth remebering though,if your ruinning an 08 ecu,the sensors on the 04 engine etc will have to be the same or it will be getting false readings from the differnce in v's

what is it you need engine wise as i have everything in parts including clutch slave/push rod, injecter coil sticks, fuel rails etc. and a head, only thing i dont have is the actuall crank cases

Yes good call on the sensors will note that down to take in to consideration, I was thinking to keep it as simple as poss use the RR8 airbox and injector rails but use RR4 everything else. Just because the airbox looks smaller on the RR8 only reason, I could do with visiting a friendly bike breaker and having a good afternoon trying some combos haha.

Would love the RR12 digi dash and saw with the RR8 you can use these with some small wiring mods, not sure if the RR12 dash would work on the RR4 loom and ECU if you spliced the wiring in.. I have too many questions :)

I have the complete engine with starter motor and all sensors etc, plus I have the RR4 airbox and throttle bodies (could flog them on if I go RR8 route) Need an ECU and loom and dash plus rec stuff etc on the loom. I was thinking for a damaged crank case, could visit the breakers and see if they have any scrap ones and same with the head just so they can be used to make up the frame mounts. Dont fancy my good engine sat in a machine shop getting covered in metal flakes!!

crank cases just get chucked usually, but wait for the 1st big freeze, there will be loads of knckered cases about then :)

oh and got a reg/rec off an 04-7 blade if you need it ;)

i'm not a breaker, just broke a few engines in my time.....

And all that hassel for maybe 20 more geegee's.........and a very large hole in your bank account!!
Why not just buy a RR4 and make it a bit special ?,I know you have the talent to do it.

Hi Haggler, well should be more than 20 as should be about 150 at the wheel stock and then some little tweaks and could get 160.. So should be talking 30- 40 HP increase which is worth having plus a fair wack of torque remember :) Plus with the CBR short wheelbase its going to be a blast to ride!

I had a deposit on an RR4 and pulled out as when push came to shove as I couldn't sell the 900 and cannot justify having two sports bikes.. Plus I dont want to start again with another bike as I know I wont be able to leave it alone and before you know it ive spent 1000's on another bike tarting it up. Ive found an engine for good money and think I can make it all happen for under 1k (thats the budget) so not crazy money and will keep me entertained :)
