hi there can any one help bought my bike second hand it the abs model starts ok then go to fill up at petrol station then the bike wont start is it the ecu problem if it is will i have to buy the ecu or will honda as i did not buy from a honda bike garage any help will be great
Hey, I wouldn't jump to conclusions without first doin some basic checks mate. Firstly how old is the battery in question? Is the battery the correct unit for the bike? Are all the fuses all in working condition and none popped? Are you getting a charge voltage to the battery while the bike is running? Are you sitting for long periods of time with the ign and lights on before starting the bike? You could also have the battery discharge tested at a gargage to see if it's still good? Some other threads were not long posted in the maintenance section with some more info, here's a link to one http://1000rr.co.uk/maintenance/13085.htm Hope you get to the bottom of the issue mate.
The ECU issue is unlikely to drain the battery in the time it takes to fill the bike, its around 30 mins for a fully charged battery, but as well laid out above check those first.
I had almost exactly the same issue as you gibby and suspected the same thing. Luckily I ran a few tests and the charging system seemed fine so the dealer I bought it from agreed to replace the battery as he suspected the battery had probably died after standing for a while. The new battery turned up last week and so far it seems to have solved the problem. But having checked my ECU it seems to be one of the units that could have the ABS drain issue - so I'll be taking a trip to my local Honda dealer soon to ask them about the potential ECU issue - just in case. Just remember, if looking into new batteries - the ABS model is different than the non-ABS. A lot of sites I was looking at batteries on, didn't make the differentiation. I think it's a YTZ10S for ABS and YTZ7S for non-ABS.
Forgot to mention that stators have an upgraded warranty to seven years because they are a known weak point, insufficient insulation or some such thing, if it does turn out to be that don't let a Honda dealer charge ya ( if your bikes under seven years of course) hope you get it sorted soon
Oops - thanks for correcting. I've corrected my post now. I remember being confused when I came to ordering one!
also a faulty rec/reg unti would mean a run to the shops would be enough to discharge your battery. I know as I have been caught out with three rec/reg units giving up on me.Thought the battery was wrecked, fitted a new one and five miles later I broke down.
