Ahhh but which Spitfire, Matt? Merlin engined or Griffon engined??

Most seem to prefer the Merlin but I've always been partial to a Griffon myself.

Griffons with the torque soaked up in a five bladed prop sound almost animalistic. Like something growling and snarling at the same time.

At the beginning of the vid I thought doesn't sound all that, sounds a bit like my lawn mower, then it was oh that was the starter!
    Awesome sound!

    World War 2.

    Consisted of lots of aeroplanes...

    and the De Havilland Mosquito.

(turn the volume up and flick the sub woofer on.)

I'm not certain, but I think the meteor wasn't much more than a normally aspirated Merlin. I'll have to look it up...

The merlin engine sound is absolutely the mutts nutts, once flew into Breighton Airfield in the mid nineties as there was a guy that owned a Spitfire and flew aerobatics in it from Breighton, was hoping that I was gonna get a real close up view/listen to it doing low level aeros, but when I got there it was stripped down in a hangar! The Spitfire owner had another toy,Yak 52,to play with so I watched him taking a couple of mates up in it,the low level aeros were great to watch from a distance of about 100 feet away but it wasn't a Merlin engine, but still made the continental engined Cessna 150 I was flying sound very un sexy.
