I'm thinking of getting a Racefit growler black edition exhaust on my road bike and have a dumb question: do I need to put the standard exhaust on to get the bike through MOT (UK)? And - as the exhaust is not road legal I assume that I cannot declare it for my insurance. How would they treat any future claim if they find out? Reject to pay out? Reject to compensate for any damage to the exhaust? Cheers for any advice!
Speaking only from personal experience: Passing the test at the MOT centre depends very much on the tester, it is now passable at their own discretion, some may pass it some may not. As for getting stopped with the exhaust, aslong as it doesn't say "race use only" or "not for road use" you shouldn't have too much of a problem although that exhaust is renowned for being very loud (see reason 2 in the MOT link). I have had an officer looking for a BS stamp on mine, never found one and didn't take it any further. In regards to insurance it could go either way, obviously you are advised to declare modifications but if it is not road legal then you can't. Although if it doesn't say anywhere on it that its not road legal I'd still declare it. In the event of a claim they may only pay out to replace the exhaust as standard. The only time that they may not pay out is if they can prove that the exhaust contributed to the accident i.e. a power/performance increase You have to be careful with exhausts because they can pass an MOT and still not comply with the construction and use regulations, hence you still get done for it. http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1986/1078/regulation/57/made?view=plain MOT UK car and vehicle MOT information equipment car servicing parts and spares - horn Remember to declare motorbike modifications to your insurer - Confused.com
Hello mate, I'm in exactly the same position I spoke to JK at Racefit and he put my mind at rest about the MOT. I'd recommend a quick chat with him, he's a very knowledgeable guy and always happy to help.
Ive got the racefit growler on my baby, put on by the Honda dealer, when i questioned about mot time, he said just pop in, have it done here, im a trifle deaf so noise wont b n issue he said with a wry smile Ive Passed loads of cops, cus i live rite by the nick, never had an issue, even when they sat behind me for couple miles
I Only went and won it folks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! For only £335.00 I am now the proud owner of this little beauty!!!!baffle and infil panel included!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pictures to follow............................
Mine passed an MOT without problem, but then I'd suggest trying to find a friendly tester. Don't remember seeing "not for road use" stamped anywhere on mine, could be wrong. As said, the infil panel comes with it- it's not carbon though
Mines a cabon fibre one for sum reason, when im home again ill take a closer lookc n stick a pic of it on here, but def carbon fibre
Perhaps they have changed then mate, did get mine at the start of the year. My infills a plastic of some kind
You'd best get some pics up quick when you get it fitted! Am chatting to a guy on eBay now about one that was for sale a few weeks back that didn't sell so watch this space
