Hi, i want to buy a cat c write off bike for the track and occasional road use, the first 2 (cheapest) insurers don't insure previous write offs. Before I go down the list one by one, anyone got any names who definitely will insure these? Cheers
Have you tried Carole Nash? Usually only the bigger insurance companies might insure a vehicle that's been written off previously
I didn't think you had the mention the history of a bike I've rode loads cat c and d and never been asked by insurance before
So I called a couple up asking the hypothetical question re insuring a cat c bike and they said whilst they will insure it on their web systems etc, when it gets to the underwriter it'll flag up as a write off, and because their policies are to not insure write offs they would then cancel my policy. Anyway, rang my blade insurer and they'll cover it reasonably 3pf&t. Not as cheap as I'd hoped but not bad either. On a separate note, looks like the v5 and the Mot cert make no reference to it being written off. Does anyone know if it should? Should it reference somewhere that it was inspected and determined fit to go back on the road or does the mot do that job? I rang dvla to ask and as far as they are concerned it isn't a write off and they suggested I call my insurance company but they said they couldnt check it either. Seems like no-one or no paperwork can confirm its write off other than hpi. Is that right? Sorry for bunch of questions but I'm in unfamiliar territory here. Cheers
The V5 used to have to show if it was on the register as a write off, but i've never had one that has, even my current Triumph which is meant to be a Cat C has no mention of it on the V5. As you say, a HPi will confirm its status as there will be no mentionmon the MOt cert, but you don't need any further checks to confirm it's road worthiness if you have the V5. I'm not even sure if a Cat C requires a VIC check on bikes, although I'm sure Wedgie can confirm this.
Cheers guys, so just buy on condition then, and factor in it'll always be worth say 25% less than market value due to the cat c status. Time to get the bankcard ready!
Cheers SPS, Carole nash came good. Happy with write off category c as long as its had an MOT since and they were not fussed about the 5 or so mods this has. And best of all, 30% cheaper than my current blade insurer wanted to cover it. Stuck it on 3pf&t as at this price I'd never be claiming anyway. Besides, eBay is full of gsxr parts do I'd just fix it if the worst happens. Cheers again.
IS the OP thinking of CBR's or other bikes? only asking as i'm having a clean up of threads on here at the moment
