Following my birthday thread yesterday http://1000rr.co.uk/lounge/14176.htm, as mentioned here's what happened when I dropped my bike on the same say.
The sun kept popping it's head out and the roads were dry so I decided a birthday ride was in order. Unfortunately the road was cold as were my tyres and the back spun up as I was leaving my street to go round a speed hump. So at a reasonably low speed the back end swung left, I turned into it, it swung right, I truned into it again, but then it snapped back round to the left and lowsided down on it's right with me still holding on in the riding position. I came to a rest up a drop curb and pulled my leg out from under the bike, a couple of guys then came over and helped lift the bike back up and push it back home.

The damage to me is quite minor, swollen & bruised thumb where the right bar trapped it against the tank when the bar end hit the ground. A bruised and grazed left calf where I must have banged the back of my leg somehow. A bruised left rib cage (no idea how that happened). And a cut above my eye, which I really can't work out how that happened as my helmet didn't touch down.

The damage to the bike is also fairly minor, although I'm really pissed with myself as that's money down the drain. Damaged tail fairing, upper & lower side panels, snapped Gilles Rearset and the crash bungs down one side.

What I want to learn from this is about the tyre. It's a Dunlop sportmax gp d212 pro on the back, which I have now lost complete confidence in. Obviously this was cold and the lack of grip when turning caused the slide, which is why I will put the tyre in storage and change to something more winter/road oriented as the Racetec front was still grippy in the cold. But is the Dunlop ever going to be any good on the road even in summer? I'm a little worried about it's lack of grip from cold as I've bought a front one and am now thinking these are only good for the track?

    Gilles peg.

Think I will now console myself with some cake, although the missus says I need to drop the cake so they look the same.

So sorry to hear about your off, I think we've all been there at some time or other.

Firstly given the change in weather recently I wouldn't use anything even loosely related to a fast road/track tyre, it's just not worth it, as you've just found out. In these conditions I would be looking at a tyre very quick to warm up and retain heat at the very least.

Secondly I'm a bit disappointed that you're crash bung didn't seem to do a great deal. I know you'll say well it saved the fairing from worse damage but from the pictures it doesn't look great.

To finish on a positive, I really like your cake :)

Glad your ok and sorry to see the bike like that.

Have you checked where you had the accident to see if there was any fuel spillage? If there was you maybe be able to claim without losing your no claims bonus!

Ref the tyres I would always try and ride on a matching pair or at least same manufacturer, as grip and handling can be massively affected using mismatched matched tyres

The two tyres you have on offer exceptional grip in dry warm temperatures but do need time to attain this grip which is why they are the preferred choice of most Track Day Riders who don't use Slicks and use Tyre Warmers.

They are not at all suited to low ambient autumm/winter use at all, nor would I mix and match any tyre from diff manufacturers.

Get some PR3's on for Winter buddy.

The D212 are really a out and out track tyre advertised for occasional road use I know they need lots of temp to work. Hope your ok mate.

Happy Birthday Muff :)But sorry to hear about your off. Not sure if any other tyre would have got any heat into itself .My thoughts are power vrs grip .You cant really measure what your right hand is applying to the wheel and then throw in the cold and possibly some ground moisture and there you have it.. I had a similar situation once where I washed the bike it looked dry but only 100m down the road the rear broke loose and flicked me into the air but I managed to save it ..5mins later loads of grip .

Dude really gutted for you on your birthday to have that happen :(

As mentioned here that is a track tyre really that is road legal and they take a fair bit to warm up so not really ideal for general use at all. I use the Pirelli DRC which is as close as you can come to track tyre without having to warm up loads before giving useable grip. Alternatively if you're gonna ride all year round the PR3's are probably the best all weather tyres.

Live to fight another day ;)

What tyres have you got on the cake? They look pretty sticky.

Sorry to hear your news mate, especially cr*p on your birthday, but the cake looked lovely. At least you are Ok and only minor damage to the bike. Still a pain in the A*** but could have been a lot worse.

Sorry to hear that mate, but at least your in one piece, which is more important...yes there is damage to the bike but that can be repaired, so only money is lost.

As for tyre i try to go into town, 2min from my house, and ride 1 lap around so that the constant start stopping at juntions helps warm them up before some faster riding...nearly lost it as a round about when another car pulled out...braked but the rear slid, so decided to just ride slower than normal from there as wasnt the best of day temp wise....my bike has PDC3 tyres for those who want to know.

We live and learn mate, happy birthday

Cheers guys. It's probably a rookie error really, in that I know it's a sports tyre, but thought that it I could carry on until getting some heat in there, I just didn't get far enough.

So if I go for PR3's in the mean time will my Dunlops be ok to put back on for the summer?
Or should I avoid using them on the roads all together?

Keep them somewhere warm and dry and they will be fine mate. I would keep them for warm track days personally ;)

ok, so now we have pretty much got to the bottom of how it happened, I'm now trying to work ok how I got some of the injuries.

Some of the bruises are starting to subside, like my thumb that got sandwiched between the right bar and tank infill when the bar end hit the ground as the bike was sliding forwards, but bearing in mind that the bike went down on the right side with me still on it I can understand how my light let got this
    [IMG]

But how on earth could my left leg have taken a bigger hit like this?

And more to the point, how could I have done this when there isn't a mark on my helmet?

Lol, the cake will have gone before the bruises I can tell you.
Found PR3's for £220 delivered. Just been ordering replacement parts in the mean time, then I can start replacing parts when i'm up to it as my ribs on the lower left still hurt too, another unexplained injury?

Muffking, does your lid fit correctly, as the only explanation can be one of 2 things,

You did not land the lid on something that could scratch it, but it come into contact with something and moved on your melon

    or

You were so pissed off with yourself, that you stuck your thumb in your eye when taking your lid off (guess you would have remembered that)
