Incidentally, if you read the Stoner autobiography extracts, he makes clear that he thinks Rossi was lucky to be at his peak when he didn't have stiff competition. "Your ambition outweighs your talent", Stoner said to him after he forced Stoner to crash in Jerez - and it clearly still rankles with him. Discuss in under 100 words. Essays in by Monday, please.
You're reading too much into the ambition statement. He clearly meant the moment in which Rossi intended to overtake (the ambition), but instead the attempt failed and he took out Stoner (the talent being outweighed). It's a comment you hear frequently in some areas of Australia when people stuff up.
Stoner still pissed with Rossi It's not me, Rented, I was paraphrasing Stoner himself! Here's the quote from the book: "After eventually finishing fifth... Valentino came around to our garage to 'apologise', although the fact he was still wearing his helmet tells you how sincere the gesture was. I responded, saying: 'Clearly your ambition outweighed your talent'. I said it lightly but I meant it. Everybody had built Valentino to be this racing genius I geniunely feel that had he come from a more difficult era like the one I came from... He wouldn't have enjoyed the same level of success". So it's nothing to do with my interpretation or a standard comment in Oz, Stoner really believes Rossi was not as good as we all think he was and he makes a point of saying so in his autobio.
I was one on here slagging him off but must 'apologise' and say the dude has come on really well ,so good luck to him.
I said at start of season it was a bad call.....but he's stuck in and improved......plus he's a Brit doing a good job in a tough place..... if he can replace Carl by a odd pod next yr then it will be a perfect....
