Last night I got a bit of a surprise.

When talking to the girlfriend and her wee man over a nice meal, the wee man says to me "I want to be like you Colin and have motorbikes when I'm older, and can I get a Pit bike for my Christmas?"

I nearly choked on my steak.
He had abviously already spoke to his mum as she had no objection to it.

Now I'm looking at some pit bikes and I'm going to book him on to the first ride thing at the NEC show.

Do any of you guys have experience with Pit bikes or have kids that are in the same position as me that can point me in the right direction.

I've been looking at this and at the price it seems decent enough to get his interest up.

I can't help but hope my girls want to get on the back of my bike one day. Might even mention a little bike for them at some point

To be honest it was a complete surprise Remal as he only started riding a bike about 2 years ago (he's 11)
He was more into his computer games and stuff, but lately he's been into all sort of stuff like skateboards and BMX's.

I did take that into consideration when looking at the bike above. A place close to us up here also stocks them (they seem to be a common bike) and also stocks all the spare parts which I knew could be a problem.

Also at that price even if he didn't take to it I could sell it and only lose about £100 so no great deal for something like this.

If you had one around here and went on some spare land the cops would chase you on crossers and then have the sucker crushed .So make sure you have some where to go .

I know this only too well mate as we used to do this in our younger days and get chased by cops on Yamaha DT125,s.
Though they had no chance as we were on race prepped motocross bikes even at the age of 14 ;)

I wouldn't let that happen now though and it was the first thing I looked at before searching for bikes.
Luckily enough there is a track 25 mins away that I can take him to.

Don't know too much but stomp and demonx seem to be the most popular dude.

Whatever it is he (you'll) have a blast... Good on the lad, better than an Xbox zombie lol

Ps - clever sod clearly knew how to pitch it ;)

Oh he knew how to get me mate, that's for sure.

Though is suspect his mum had something to do with that somehow ;)

Either way a couple of hours every other weekend or so would be good.

Colin I wanna be like you when I'm older! Can you Please buy me a bike? :D

The Honda my first licence is a book on the day only for 5-11 yr olds, so that's the first booth to hit up when arriving at the NEC!

Awesome- My lads got a demon x 140. They are what they are mate, my lad blew his engine (originally a 110), engine change. The carbs can be a bloody mare trying to set up and the floats sticking.

He's also blown a fork seal, but then a new set of forks is something like £50

I would personally avoid pit bikes all together and get a small mx bike yam or Honda etc, as stronger parts are easier to get hold of and cheaper for parts too

sorry mate, there is no way that yam or honda parts are either cheaper or easier to get hold of than pit bike stuff... they cost peanuts and are everywhere. as dave say's they are not of the same quality than a proper motox bike but you get what you pay for.

imo a decent pit bike is perfect for a youngster to learn on.... might not like it / get to grips with it / get much use / get bored so it's a good intro for not a huge outlay.

Dave's lads is excellent fun for the money, my bro in law has a demonx 160 and i wish i had something as good as that when i was 11.... as opposed to a 15yr out of date stroker which blew up every 5 mins.....

I know when a baby tyke rocks up he/she will be getting into bikes, they don't know this yet obviously, I know it is a certainty. Hopefully they will have better balance than their dad... :)

I'm with the MX route. I have two lads 16/10, ....10 year old started on PW80, then KTM 65 and now a KTM 85, it goes like the wind! Scares his dad. Its all really well organised and races are all good fun. You'll enjoy the scene and he'll learn how to ride safely (ish) and fast, developing real pro skills.
You can sell the bikes for about what you paid for them, and get second hand kit on ebay, New helmet tho.
    Good luck Mike.
Just looked at the Ad....... for that money you'll get a ktm65. and be able to compete in races when he gets the skill.
