Ok sorry guys and girls nothing to do with bikes but hoping someone may be able to help We are thinking of getting a lab so firstly any advice on what too look for or ask 2nd I have seen adverts for working breed and normal breed, is there a physical difference in look or temperament? What does it mean? Thanks in advance
What the f....... Martin. Don’t you know this is a Fireblade forum. LOL. I have no idea but L is the font of all knowledge regarding dogs, mainly Chinese breeds, she has long gone to bed but I will ask her in the morning and retort if she has any advice.
Working dogs are bred from gun dogs and similar so will be more highly strung and require more attention, where as normal breed are from house pets and usually easier to look after
There seems to be some that are tall and skinny and some shorter legged and chunky, is that a different type or just the way they turn out?
I have a black lab Martin, as I said in a previous thread somewhere one of the best £300 I have ever spent. Douglas is 7yrs old now and came from a award winning gun dog family, excellent temperament but couldn't find shit if it landed in front of his nose, he is hopeless at the gun dog bit. Luckily for him he is just a family pet, very loyal unless somebody has any food as it's belly first / family second He comes from the mallard breed of Labrador which means he has a big head similar style to the mallard duck If your thinking of getting one you won't be disappointed, a truly amazing breed of dog with a big heart which will bring years of enjoyment
I think it's a black one we would go for, how many breeds are there, we like the longer leg type but can't find any info on the net
We have just bought a lab / cocker cross bitch we named Tilly I have had a lab before so can see the same traits in her, very loyal and intelligent, great with the kids and obsessed with food of any description !!! Cocker is the scatty / wingding side from what I can see, but she rarely does either. Great dogs working or not from a pup they will behave how you want them to with training IMO
I couldn't say how many breeds there are as they are now crossed with so many different breeds of dog, best advice I can give is when you decide to view one (which is the fatal part btw as you just want to take them home there and then) is ask to see the parents as it can give you a idea to how it will turn out
go on the kennal club website fella or google lab breeders and do as much research as you can before speaking to a breeder,i mum gad someone call for one of her pups not long ago and they asked for a black pup when the breed is all white a breeder only want the best homes for there pups and will know if you have researched the breed or not
Martin, mum has a Lab retriever and he's nuts but great with everyone and my kids it's worth traveling to find a good breeder and I can highly recommend Welcome to Countryways where mum go Alfie from he's not cheap but they are top gundogs. they like a walk and at 7 alfie is still like a kid but great. Do your homework and as said look for recommended breeders. Kennel club or pet plan websites have links to good breeders I am currently going over the bridge to Gloucestershire 15 miles from chepstow to get our cocker. main reason for not using countryways is they have no young cockers for the next few months and we have been looking for about 4-6 months. and why we are traveling a hour north to get our dog hope that helps
Martin has just made it easy on his family for Christmas and birthday gifts.......flat cap, pipe, slippers and Rover estate. Lovely dogs mate, prefer the black ones myself, also have a look at Old English Springers, taller than standard, intelligent, trainable, and loyal.
Get plenty of Sxxt bags what ever dog you choose;-) Make sure you feed it right or it can be difficult to pick off of the pavement ;-)
