When I was a kid we did not have a TV until 1962, up until then it was the radio. One of my customers was on the phone the other day and they asked him his date of birth, he replied 1917. It seems hard to comprehend the changes he has seen through his life. He has an iphone and uses the internet every day , quite incredible really.
Me too re the wired remote.......rented (not bought) from Radio Rentals.......remember the Rediffusion TV a man had to come round and change the valve periodically......and telly was'nt available 24 hours a day....the Test Card anyone!. God this is like "All Our Yesterdays" fellas......only those of a certain vintage will remember.......perhaps we better have an Old Codger section as well
What about wetting 50p coins and slapping them in the meter in your first flat? or piling the leccy meter on books to stop the wheel going around..... Ahh, those where the days....
I'm saying now't..... apart from did someone really say 2 bob bits in this post? I just thought that was cockney rhyming for tits!
We used to have a bloke come round with what looked like a miniature petrol tanker with paraffin for the heaters
Funny you say that Si ,I have recently done a similar request three times and that's exactly what entered my head ...like WTF when is mine coming up . But you know what they say dude ... Plenty a good tune played on an old fiddle " Thinking about The Firebloke Mind"
Should I mention The Rag and bone man pushing his handcart around the streets shouting Rag Bone ? And in exchange for a few rags you got either a Donkey stone to clean up the front steps or for us a balloon .
I'm saying now't..... apart from did someone really say 2 bob bits in this post? I just thought that was cockney rhyming for tits! Threepenny bits is rhyming slang for tits, that really shows my age.
2 bob bits are the old equivelant of what is now 10p. As for the cockney rhyming slang for the female anatomy I think you mean threpenny bits
Everytime i mention my childhood to my kids they look at me like im an alien, they dont believe that we had to put coins in our tv and telephone apparently im "ancient" at 38
Another one, my mum put a lock on our telephone, but we got around it by lifting the handset, and pressing the hang up buttons in sequence to the numbers..... waahaaay
Bill n Ben where in bed, bill said flopper dopper.... Ben said if you really loved me you'd swallow that !!!
Think it was 4 mojos or 4 blackjacks for a penny, the old big 1d*. but could have been a h'apenny. Also did the esso blue/kerosene collection, as well as getting ciggies for the parents. Yes and the coin in the slot TV with a rotary dial to change channel. * no that that new 1d bunch of nonces, the old coin that was about the size of a £2 coin.
Who remembers these bad boys? If anything was left on top of the thing when that eject button was pressed it would land up hitting the ceiling. Lol- defiantly feeling old!
