The sort of toy the PC world of today denies the youth of today....and who can deny that the ability to shoot tin cans is an essential life skill :)

Oh yes, my old man brought my brother and I one of those..........and...........without any reason what so ever, not even a birthday, the Hot Wheels Motorway.....now we are talking.

How about Mecarno ? We had the boxed set no 10 but even back then my OCD wouldn’t let me bend the metal pieces and risk cracking the paint.

Now you're hitting on the nub of toys of 'our' generation. You could adapt them for other things. Admittedly violent and dangerous things, but I learned more about engineering from adapting one toy to another than I ever did from meccano or leggo (actually betta-builder in our house)

One Xmas Kevin and I had these.

    image.jpg

Ricochet Racers. They were a portable launcher for streamlined, bullet like Hot Wheels cars, but in essence, they were spring loaded guns.

The old man took great pride in telling us that there were four independant interlocks on them, meaning that in order to fire them you had to hold down a 'dead man's handle', the trigger and the gun had to be in contact with the ground and connecting the launch track before it would fire.

'Lets see you bugger them up, you little swine'.

By lunch time we were shooting each other with Dinky cars and SP2 batteries. Much to his dismay, but I reckon secret pride.

That's how we learned to fix things.

And if you tell a youngster that t'day........they won't believe you!

Meccano was one of my favourites. My first record, bought by my Mum was 'How much is that doggy in the window'. Sherbert flying saucers and sherbert dabs, refreshers and of course love hearts, given to girls to win favours !

My favourite, especially when they started building a new housing estate beside our house and I could wander around exciting things like foundations and cement mixers at will at the weekend, but take one of these; TONKA!

I did one of those FaceBook quizzes the other day on 'find your mental age'. I'm 17, apparently.

Nige, welcome to my office stash...

p.s. Love this thread... and our remote control wire wasnt long enough - you still had to get up to change the channel ;oP

the single toy, without any doubt, that caused the biggest response when it came into the house was this...

    image.jpg

    Johnny Astro

Kevin and I had one each, of course, to avoid blood on the Lino by Boxing Day, and they were played and played and played with until they wore out, whereupon, one was used as a donor to repair the other and a truce over usage was agreed (mainly Kevin having to retrieve the lost balloon while I was flying it (I really hope my brother never has control over the 'do not resuscitate' form, because payback is a bitch)). Eventually the hybrid fell apart too and the old man had to track down two new copies, which again, were played to meltdown, but, sadly no more replacements were available.

Still not quite got over that.
