Today's the day... Fibre optic broadband is coming to the house of Ken! Well, nearly to the house of Ken. It's coming to the cabinet at the end of the road then it's good old 60 year old copper cable to the pole at the end of the garden (thankfully, the Fox missed that one during his escape), then 1 year old cable from the pole to the house (BT have, at least tried to improve the bandwidth here before). Whatever happens, there has to be an improvement on the 0.92mbs I've had for the last 10 years. Hasn't there...?
I might also add that today is the first day off, on my own that I've had in ages that the sun is out, and I'm sitting waiting for an engineer to arrive. Pain and pleasure principle in action.
You're going to love it! Next, you will have running hot water installed, and the gas lamps replaced with filament bulb lighting....LED is a step too far.....
Slow down there big boy. Let's not run before we've finally eliminated the black death from the village. Seriously, Si mate. I never thought that they would ever condescend to bring fibre optics to the village. Our exchange is 5 miles away and the distance is just too far for copper and BT point blank refused to place us on the new exchange in the middle of the village. However. Planning for 2500 new houses right behind the Devon Hotel is currently going through the motions and all of a sudden we're knee deep in Open Reach vans. Call me cynical but...
Awesome, Ken. 0.92mb must be absolutely miserable. Just think, you'll be able to up your miserable post rate on here now.
I once played Halo with a friend in Exmouth. About 4 miles as the crow flies, on the opposite side of the estuary. All I could hear on the headphones was him wetting himself laughing as he fragged my arse. He kept shouting that my guy looked like he was doing 'The Robot'. Never again.
Theoretically, up to 79mbs downstream, but that's fibre exchange to house. Realistically, I'm expecting between 20 and 30, so we'll see. We suffer from being not rural enough to warrant special case but so close to the city that we're bundled in with the '80% have more than 2mbs' government tickbox.
Well it's going to be a night and day difference compared to what you're getting at the moment. Let's face it. Nobody likes waiting for pornography.
It doesn't half give you a cricked neck when it stops suddenly. Still, I could get used to this home alone thing, you know. I had a lie in, so far I've had two decent cups of coffee. I've cleaned the bathroom, hoovered all through, loaded the dish washer and the washing machine. Spent some time in the garden, watching the birds on the feeders. Put the cameras on charge for a christening I've been lumbered with tomorrow (yawn). I've dicked around on here and FaceBook. Done some more work on my new PC. Made a top ten favourite singles playlist (I may still change my mind about some of them though). Now I'm drawing up a bracket to attach a £1500 Eizo monitor bracket to a £79 HP monitor. I could get used to this housewife lark.
You'd soon get bored of it. I can stomach just so much hanging around the house before I feel my brain turning to slime. I honestly reckon I'll be one of those blokes who kicks the bucket 4 weeks after retiring.
Been thinking about this a lot recently, Rich. I'm one of these guys who really, really can do bugger all, but also know that after a while, I'd flush that out of my system. So, my plan is to wait it out when the time comes, wash all the idleness out of my system, then get on with the serious business of doing my own thing without being at everyone's beck and call. Plus, my brother's just given me an arc welder. Think of the carnage I could cause with that.
I'm on 60mb Virgin media. With Wifi, it fluctates between 20-50mb, hard wired i get around 61mb D/l, but only 3.5mb upload.
Exactly the same here, mate. 60mb Virgin and I get 62-63mb when I do a speed test. Same story with the upload though. I've always got just over what Virgin sell me and I was actually thinking about going for the 120mb yesterday. I think we're into the realms of taking the piss a bit there though. An average album will download in about 10 seconds with what I've got at the mo. And it looks like I'm going to have to pay Virgin extra money / month in order to get the MotoGP next year
You could weld yourself up a coffin I'm really not good at doing bugger all. I hate the way that entire days slide by without achieving anything. Even if my idea of achieving something involves going to work, sitting in my office and buying brake lines off eBay
I am in a village and we recently have had a fibre cabinet installed, being 500 meters from the cabinet means my max speed is only 53mb lol, a huge difference from the 1.5mb I was getting Enjoy mate
Think I may have another go at that playlist. I wonder how much it would cost to put Sonos through the house... Oh! It's lunch time! I've got some rather nice foie gras in the fridge and a mate gave me a bundle of back issue Fast Bikes...
I've only had Virgin home broadband since I moved in with the girlfriend, before that I was using my mobile as my wifi but at least I got at least 7-13mb download speed! 0.92mb would have down my head in
You like in Exeter not deepest mid welsh vallys with no leccy right ken ? Do you live in the sticks there? Fiber been here for about 14 years since telewest was about So yours should say welcome to the 20th Century lol
