When the exchanges were put in here, the policy was 'it's a frightful waste of money to put one in every village for the six or seven telephones in each one, so let's share one exchange between two villages'. They tossed a coin and Kennford (4.5 miles away) won the toss, so all the original phone lines into the village (including ours) were routed from there. About 20 years ago, my village got it's own exchange but swapping to it was prohibited because all the reserve capacity was earmarked for new builds and the Marsh Barton trading estate (I know, I had a woman on the inside who tried to swap it for me. The official line is to deny this). Ever since, we've been told, in a very corporate way, tough shit whenever we have complained. Then, in the autumn, we noticed Open Reach engineers, frantically working on all the cabinets in the area and realised something was changing. Over 3000 new builds on various sites within the parish boundaries, in fact. All of a sudden, I get an email from somebody in the business telling me to check availability of Infinity for my number. Sure enough, all of a sudden, with absolutely no announcement to the public, there suddenly is a fibre optic option available.

Now averaging 20mbs, by the way.

Good job they don't have this in Southport or we would never see The FireBloke ever again.

    :D

He'd probably be confused, not understanding the concept that he doesn't need to seduce the computer with fain waines and Charles Mingus.

Jeanette's getting about 56mbs on her iPhone. I think she might feint.

I'm managing a lowly 36 on the iPad and about 24 on the computers. I'll work out why when I get over the shock.

It must feel pretty good to have wandered out of Brunellian England and joined the rest of us in the 21st century, Ken.

The difference in speeds is probably down to what bands your items are picking up the wifi with!

I shall read up on this, but be warned, I have a geek blind spot for all things networking.

I ordered BT Infinity on the 12th December with an activation date on the 14th January, paid up front for the years line rental and took the opportunity to replace the ancient phone.

On the 21st we received an unannounced visit from Openreach saying we won't be able to get Infinity as the pole outside that carries the BT equipment isn't suitable, no further explanation offered.

I called BT on the 22nd and queried what the Openreach engineer said and they, BT were not aware of any problems nor had any engineers reports been submitted so as far as BT were concerned everything was still going ahead for activation on the 14th January and not to worry.

On the 3rd Jan I received a call from BT Digital Care saying we had been booked in for a survey as there was a problem with the order and the activation date of the 14th would be delayed.

On the 4th Openreach called confirming there was a problem with the pole outside as it didn't belong to BT but Western Power so they are unable to use it for Infinity even though our phone line comes off the same pole. So where does that leave me.

Well, the property over the road has Infinity installed via underground cables ?!? BT are now scheduling to dig up the road and part of my drive to run a new cable over to our property, as of yet I haven't heard any more.

I knew I would regret it, just knew it but at least I still have Broadband with Virgin so it's not desperate will be interesting to see how this develops, and when.

Git ;) I live in an area that wouldn't qualify as a village, basically just a few houses. On a good day we get 2mb and no sign of anything improving under the government scheme. Did try a wifi provider but there was no antenna pointing in our direction. Oh well we could always wait for 4g but that would be a longer wait lol

    Enjoy the bandwidth :)

Up until last month I was averaging 2mb but after complaining to ee and a new router I'm now about 8mb. I,m in a fairly big town but still no fibre yet despite loads of open reach vans around. Our friends who live in a tiny village miles from anywhere have had it for over a year!! We might have it 1 day lol

Weeping and crawling back to the 19th century...

Well, the joy joy of high speed, global telecommunication lasted five days.

Got home last night to a strident orange flashing light on the front of the new hub. I'm struggling to envisage any circumstance in which a strident orange flashing light is a good sign, and in this case, I was correct in my deduction. Rebooting the hub afforded me a few, brief seconds of assuring, calming blue steady light, before reverting to strident orange flashing light again.

The handbook for the hub gave a troubleshooting guide of lights and their meaning that doesn't actually include a strident orange flashing light. It does give an explanation for a steady orange light and here I quote verbatim from the manual: "There is a problem somewhere".

    Da'fuq!

Very well. I must gird my loins and call the helpline. I've been here before, I know the routine (almost by heart). I pick up the phone and....no phone either...

It's at this point, my beloved wife informs me that a neighbour has had no phone all day either and there is a suspicion that the huge amount of BT and third party engineers in the village connecting resident's to the new fibre optic system may have been less delicate while jostling each other for space to swap wires in the 60 year old cabinet at the end of the road.

Oh well, the automated fault finding website says somebody will contact me within the next 24 hours regarding the matter...

I've just had the engineers round too to sort out my TIVO tellybox service so that I can watch the MotoGP and they supercharged my broadband with the deal and I just had to share it with you, Ken :D

That's a very impressive number though, Rich.

I've had broadband for about 10 years now only the last 2 being about 0.9 mbs. Until then it was about 0.3...

Since the FO went live and the bun fight between all the different provider's engineers causing havoc in the exchange, we've been getting an average of 40mbs on my iPad, 25mbs on the wifi laptop, PC and wired PC and 60mbs on Jeanette's iPhone.

So I'm as happy as a pig in shit, regardless.

It's the advantage of living in scumbagville, Ken. They wired the whole area for cable years ago to keep the unemployeds pacified. I like to think of it like a slightly colder and smoggier version of The Matrix.
