So as you guys might know I've just bought a van. Everything on it seems tip top apart from when changing gear. The stick is fine and easy to use when the engine is off, when the engine is running 1st and 2nd are a bit of a pig to get, the stick seems a bit stiff. Ive had a look under the rubber stick cover at the bottom but nothing seems to be preventing its movement. Is this signs of clutch trouble??

    Cheers

Gonna change the gearbox oil as it probably hasn't been done since it rolled out the factory and its 80odd K miles now

Possibly clutch worn or possible 1st & 2nd sincro or fork worn inside gear box.

Is it only 1st n 2nd or are all gears stiff but not quite as bad?

How high is the bite point of the clutch and does it slip?

The bite point I would say is about mid way from the clutch being full pressed down to being all the way up. It is mainly 1st and 2nd, 3rd 4th and 5th are dead easy to change. Tbh second isn't that bad, its just first. I go to change into first and it slides in and stops, then with a bit more push it clicks into gear and off I go. Its quite notchy I suppose is the way to describe it. How would I go about changing the oil in the gearbox? Its mk6 RWD

Hi YT is it 2.4 rear wheel drive ? If it is transits do suffer with a grabby first second gear especially if the dual mass flywheel has been changed for solid

Sorry just read it was a RWD mate I wouldn't get to concerned yet whining and chucking itself out of gear which my FWD transit has been doing for 20k then think about changing box piece of piss on a RWD . Don't get to worried yet use it I have a few boxes if it gets worse you can have one

RWD...ahh...does it crunch into reverse at all and how it the change from 2nd to 1st ??
If it's crunches then could be clutch not fully releasing, if 2nd to 1st is hard then could be syncro rings, or the really simple one that the end of gearlever into thye box has worn..
They used to be a nylon bushing and over time these allow the lever to travel too far across and make the shift stiff.

If it had been the FWD then these are on cables and sometimes these need adjusting, also the pivots on the box wear and make selection a pain in the rear.

My FWD Transit has hardly any 3rd gear syncro, clean gearchange either up or down are nearly impossible, I've given up caring TBH, eventually 3rd gear is going to blow and then I'll see about a new van as gearboxes are like hens teeth as it's a common fault.

First to second is smooth, its always going into first either from neutral or coming down the gears. First gear is the main issue. Second is every so slightly stiff sometimes but nothing bad, not compared to first gear anyway.

According to the transit forum its stretched cables or the selector bearing?? This forum is a lot more helpful must admit, I've asked how I would go about checking them to which the guy has replied "There is a haynes manual for the MK6" Geeez! Great help!!

Sounds the synchromesh on these gears may be worn, If you double clutch does that help? also if you are changing from 1st to 2nd if you lift/balance the revs a bit does that help. If it does its pointing that way.
Sorry to hear you got bother.
    Mike.

Try putting it in second before first gear.
Sounds like clutch to me.Probably the dual mass flywheel on its way out too. Most rwds have trouble with first when early signs of clutch/dm flywheel going.
When you change the clutch ditch the dual mass flywheel and get a conventional clutch kit with a standard flywheel. They last longer and it is probably half the price.
might be worth running it in to a garage you can trust for a proper diagnosis.
