    HI guys

My generator packed up on ACU day on sunday. Damn!!

Can't really afford anything flash atm but do any of you know of a generator that isn't too pricey or maybe selling one?

Only has to power a set of tyre warmers

Also anyone know what KW/KVA rating I would need to do a set of warmers??

    Cheeeeeers

Tyre warmers draw around 1 - 1.2kw in electrical loading.

kVA is the raw product of voltage and current
kW is the real power delivered to the load
kW and kVA are equal if the voltage and current are perfectly in step.
kVA and kW are related by the 'power factor' of the load. kVA = kW/pf
When pf=1.0, then kVA = kW.
pf can never be greater than 1.0 .
Most (but not all) loads have pf > 0.7. So as a reasonable guess you can say 'kVA will certainly be greater than or equal to kW, and probably be less than kW * 1.4 '

    .......................anyway

A 1kW Genny will be too small so I'd be looking at a minimum of a 2kva / 1600 watt unit but a 2kW + unit would be best Mark

I have one of these which although expensive will boil a kettle too! :D

I got mine from machine mart about £290 but will do 2 sets of tyre warmers they seem very good on pricing and have a good after sales service if any problems.

Have a look on Ebay Mark if you're a bit strapped, you'll just have to sort through the duffers though.

Mark really important factor when your buying a generator is the DB level of it ,as you will find the cheaper the generator the louder it is and what you don't want to do is keep everyone awake in the paddocks including yourself at night if you have it running, even in the day the last place I would want to be if I was chilling is next to someone with a generator that sounds like a 747 taking off. :D

So for a purely resistive load such as tyre warmers KVA=KW??

I think on any race day Jimbo we could struggle to get a garage if you think it's a two day event with all the caravans that will be plugged in to electric plus how many races there is taking place that's a lot of people .On a track day they have 3 groups with say 30-35 in each group so 90/100 people and the garages soon get full. There will be a lot more than 100 people racing over the 2 days so either a very long extension lead is needed or a generator just in case.:D

Also worth getting a low wattage kettle you can get 800 watt ones most kettles you have in your house are approx 2000-3000 watt so a cheapish generator would struggle to boil a kettle and your warmers plugged in.

    Geez,
Dave I hope some local roadworks location isn't soon to be having difficulty with traffic lights becoming inoperative due to a missplaced generator trailer is it? :D
