Hi, Wanted to get a number plate - not sur eif i should get it on a single line or 2? Going on a R&G Tail tidy. the original looks BIG...! What size can i get away with? and whats the cheapest place for me to buy...?
with a single line you can get a fine of upto £100 form the old bill there isnt a minimum size of the plate but the characters must be the same as for the spaces must also be the same it must also be in two lines Minimum Character sizes are: Character height 64mm Character width 44mm (expect 1 & i) Stroke width 10mm Space between characters 10mm Vertical space between characters 13mm Horizontal space between characters 30mm Margins 11mm
You ok if you can get less letters and numbers on a private plate, A1 Would see a very small legal plate lol But I guess 7×5 will not get the police worried about stopping you? But if they decided to get the tape out then nothing smaller than standard 9×7 will do
i've run a 7 x 5 for years now and never been stopped yet.. touch wood that continues. I think its the really small fag packet plates (i do have one in the garage but its never on to honest) that the cops get arsy about as their computers cannot read the plate..
Basically it depends on the last time the copper got his leg over, if he argued with his boyfriend last night, and if Tesco had ran out of his favourite doughnuts when he went to buy his daily dozen that day.
last time i go pulled - i think i got fined £30...not sure why it would be £100? or is that max? its just a fixed penalty..no? think i can work with 7x5 some places charge £20 for 1 plate...is this normal price?
Got a £30 fix or repair order from the Met Bacon for a 7x5 plate that I had on my first Daytona. Moved it up to an 8x6 and didn't attract too much attention after that providing you have the legal size font. To be honest as crappy as the standard size looks if I keep the obvious things like that legit then the bacon have to have a very good reason to stop me. My advice would be no smaller than 8x6 but 9x7 is the legal size and it gives them one less thing to moan about on your bike don't give them any more ammunition that you have to mate at the end of the day. Certainly all of the biker bacon I've met and been stopped by in the Met and Kent Police have all had the "What gives you the right to do that on MY roads" attitude which, quite frankly doesn't fly with me and I'm well versed in exactly what my rights are and take great pleasure in reminding them of that when they get all snotty and power trip on you.
I have a private reg on my bike, just 6 digits. The plate was made at a local motor factors in accordance with the law, then I took a craft knife to it and cut it down so the borders are at the minimum size. It's a fully legal plate and is smaller than one I got off flea bay "not for street use" I assume that the police either aren't that arsed, or can see it's legal as I've been in front of a few patrollers and never had any issues.
Have been done a few times now for running a small plate. Single row Essex Police definately dont like. Last pull was for 6 x 2 (piss take I know) but looked good on the R1. £60 fine, plus notice from DVLA advising must send in photograhic evidence of legal size plate, showing manufactures post code etc. If could not provide within 28 days, would give me a nice new Q plate !!! Have had 7 x 5 on the Blade, and so far no probs. Prefer the single row, but not worth the risk.
I used to have a nice single line 8 x 2 "holiday" plate that I put on when going to France, but two us got stopped by the Gendarme who suggested they were too small even for over there. Over here I had a 7 x 5 but tended to put the full sized plate on if I was going anywhere near popular biking destinations, they often seem to have someone looking to stop you if you give them a reason.
Mines a 6x4 and never had any issues with the constabularies in the north and I have always ran with this size plate, I've found aslong as its readable and clear all seems good in my experiences I can post up a pic if You want
5x4 "Holiday Plate" It has cost me £180 in fines by North Wales rozzers, so only put it on when touring Europe now...
